Wow! We are in our final half term on Year 5 - this year has flown by!
In English, we have continued reading our class book 'The Explorer'. We have reflected on all of the animals that the children have met in the rainforest and we have picked one of these to write a non-chronological report about. From jaguars, to caimans, to pink river dolphins the children have thoroughly enjoyed researching their chosen animal and recording all of their amazing facts. We have then published our reports as double page spreads, thinking about the presentation and layout of our work, as well as the content of the written work.
In our Maths lessons, we have spent one week revising written methods of the four operations, as it seems like a long time ago since we first covered them. This week we have started our new topic about measurement. We have spent the week converting between different units of measurement: mm, cm, m and km, as well as g and kg.
As Geographers, we have started looking at deserts, to answer the question 'Would you like to live in a desert?' We have located the major deserts in each continent of the world, as well as identifying the physical and human features of the Mojave Desert. We used our learning to write a postcard to someone at home as if we had been on holiday in the Mojave Desert.
Our new Science topic has been looking at human development. We looked at the key milestones in our lives and were amazed at how many occurred within the first couple of years of our lives!
We have also started reading the book 'You Are Awesome' by Matthew Syed. This book is all about understanding that you can get better at anything if you keep trying and learn from your mistakes. It helps you believe in yourself and know that with effort, you truly are awesome and can achieve amazing things! The children have been setting goals: both big and small, and thinking about how we can reach these goals.
For homework this half term, we have asked the children to complete at least 3 pieces of homework for the homework grid. Well done to those children who have already shown us some amazing homework!
