Year 5 have worked extremely hard since returning from the summer holidays. Last week, the children enjoyed creating self portraits of themselves in art. The children also completed their class charters and thought carefully about the responsibilities the children and the adults have in order to respect the rights. In English, the children have begun reading The London Eye Mystery which already has them hooked! This week they wrote in role as one of the main characters, Ted, and enjoyed writing the way he thinks. In maths we have started reading and writing numbers up to 1000000 as well as comparing them. In our financial education lesson we discussed what we would spend £20 on. The children really thought carefully about their answers which can be found on our class money trees. Within our history lesson we have been looking at the different dynasties through the years and next week we will be creating a timeline related to this. In art this week the children have been exploring what typography is and creating art from their new knowledge. In science, the children have been measuring the weight and mass of different objects that they could find in the classroom.
This year there is a focus on reading and trying to foster that love for reading. The children have been reading their books each morning as well as at home. Well done Year 5 - keep it up!
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:
Maths - We will be finishing our place value chapter and moving onto addition and subtraction.
Writing - We will be working towards writing a newspaper report about the disappearance of Salim.
Reading - In Reading we will be moving onto focusing on prediction questions. The children will be looking at the text they have read and deciding on what may happen next based on what has happened so far.
History - We will be looking at mapping out the different dynasties on a timeline and moving onto looking at the religion of the Shang Dynasty.
Science - In science we will be looking at the effects of friction on an object and understanding how variables affect it.
