Year 4 have been transported to the past in two exciting workshops and have experienced what life was like in the Anglo-Saxon era and what happened to Jesus and hid disciples during the Easter Story.
Year 4 are continuing to use the story of Beowulf to inspire our writing. We have written a narrative of Beowulf's final battle, the battle with a fire breathing dragon. We have focused on using prepositions (to shown position) and adverbials of manner to make our writing more interesting.
In Reading, we have begun the book, The Wolf Trials by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. This is the story of a Eira, a hidden princess who competes in the Wolf Trials in disguise to prove her bravery to her mother the Wolf Queen. We have been using the text to develop our prediction and summarising skills. We have used clues from the text to help make our predictions and have searched for the main points in a section of the text to help us summarise. So far the book has been very exciting and we can't wait to find out what happens next.
In Maths, we have begun a new unit focusing on area and perimeter. We have used square units to measure the area of polygons and have explored how to use multiplication to work out the area of rectangles and squares. We have also used our measurements to compare the area and perimeter of different polygons and help us to order them by size.
In Science, we have continued with our topic sound and vibration. We have measured sound in decibels and looked at how the higher number of decibels indicates the louder the sound. We described the relationship between the size of the sound wave relates to the volume and we also thought about safety with sound and what noises could damage our hearing. We have also explored how the volume of noise changes over distance and how noises become quieter the further away from them we are.
We have continued our History topic, How hard was it to invade and settle Britain? We enjoyed our Anglo-Saxon workshop where we explored what it was like to be an Anglo-Saxon, building our own homes, farming our land, gathering crops to give to the king as taxes and then we helped act out the story of Beowulf. In class, we have explored the Sutton Hoo burial site and looked at the artefacts that were buried there. We used these artefacts to help draw conclusions about the person buried there and what it told us about Anglo-Saxon life in general. We are now exploring whether King Alfred was truly a great king.
Our second workshop, was the Easter Experience. We visited North Cheam Baptist Church where we joined in with the story of Jesus from his arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his resurrection on Easter Sunday. We moved round the church to various scenes from the story and we were asked to join in with the acting. We really enjoyed taking part in the story and asked amazing questions about the story to the actors at the end of the event.
