Year 1
Year 1
Time flies when you're having fun in Year 1! We've had another action-packed two weeks!
Our little authors have been hard at work, creating fantastic non-fiction books about tigers in Literacy. The children have enjoyed learning facts about tigers and have used Seesaw to help formulate their sentences ready to go into their tiger books. They even made a contents page and glossary!
In maths, we've been building and exploring numbers to twenty with Dienes, really understanding the magic of tens and ones! The teen numbers are trickier to learn because of the change in names for numbers and having to understand the digits being one ten and so many ones. We're also working hard on mastering one more and one less with the numbers to 20.
Science has been a fascinating exploration of animal diets, and we're learning all about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. The children enjoyed the sorting activity on Seesaw and are beginning to understand how to classify animals in different ways. Science week saw us participating in some exciting animal yoga positions and making wormeries. Mrs Walters was holding the container with all the worms that we collected from the forest school area and it did look a bit like a bowl of moving spaghetti! We all had great fun making the wormeries!
In Geography, we've been mastering our compass skills and having a blast with direction! The children all had a compass and worked out the directions for facing north south east and west. They had great fun following movement commands to travel in each of the directions. This week we have also created our own weather station with a thermometer to check the daily temperature, a rain gauge to measure any rainfall and a wind streamer – let's see what the weather brings!
