Dear Parents and Carers,
Wow! What a busy first term in Year 5 we have had. The children have all worked incredibly hard all term and have produced some fantastic pieces of work. Have a lovely and restful Christmas break and we look forward to seeing you all again in the new year!
Writing
We have written our final piece of writing based on the book Kensuke's Kingdom. We looked in detail at the chapters where Michael defies Kensuke and builds a beacon and goes swimming despite Kensuke telling him not to. We re-wrote this part of the story from Kensuke's point of view, thinking about his reasons for stopping Michael. We also looked at using speech to convey character in our writing and we tried to include a range of fronted adverbials and lots of figurative language. The children should all be really happy with their writing as this is definitely one of the best pieces of writing they have produced this year!
Maths
For the last two weeks we have been looking at timetables and line graphs. We have had to read them, answer questions about them and draw our own graphs.
Science
In Science we have finished our topic of Changes of Materials by looking at irreversible changes, such as rusting and burning. We had to make careful observations and comparisons and we loved using the 'Speak like a Scientist' sentences to explain our findings.
Design and Technology
We have finished our pop-up books. We evaluated them thinking about how successful they were at meeting our design brief.
Music
The Christmas performance was a joy to watch! The children sang beautifully and performed with great confidence. A big thank you to all the parents who came to watch - we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
Reading Diaries
We would like to remind you that all children should be reading at least 5 times a week. Reading more together is incredibly beneficial and it will help the children in school, especially in their English lessons!
