Year 1
Year 1
Year One's special two weeks started with Jade Class being rewarded for having the best attendance rate in KS1 last week and as such they had a visit from Coco - the 'Well-being Woofer' to congratulate them!
We then had the opportunity to participate in a Now>Press>Play event which was held for schools across the country. We dove into a magical experience of the Christmas Story. This was a lovely afternoon spent using our imagination.
Our writing over the past two weeks has focused on finishing our captivating story 'The Three Little Pigs'. We created our own books and captioned different pictures found in the book. A class favourite was 'Chinny, chin chin'. We also began our new fairy tale story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be labelling the characters -ensuring we use our capital letters- acting out the story making sure we use our prosody voice, showing the shock of finding Goldilocks in Baby Bears bed. We are embedding the different situations we use capital letters for, including places, the pronoun I, names and the beginning of a sentence.
These past two weeks in Geography have been very exciting. We have practised becoming our very own geographers like the famous 'Eratosthenes'. We have delved into the world of compasses, directions and learning to move and travel in all cardinal directions, even moving North to find a naughty elf hiding nearby. We labelled our compass, directed our friends and used our very own compass to find North, South, East and West, or as we call it, Never Eat Silly Worms!
As we continue on our journey creating Christmas puppets, we have sewn a running stitch on binka and had to thread our own needles! This was tricky, but the excitement is building for using our designs and new-found sewing skills next week, (with our parent helpers), to create our final puppets. We can't wait for the angels, reindeer's and other Christmas puppets to be made.
In Science we have investigated different materials, focusing on their different properties and if they are absorbent or not. We carried out an experiment, controlling the water amount with pipetts and tested to see which materials would absorb the water. We used our science voices, like Stephen Hawking, to conclude whether these materials were absorbent.
In Maths, we started a brand new and exciting topic: shape. We explored shape tiles and our ability to manipulate and use our spatial awareness to rotate and create different pictures and patterns using our tiles. We enjoyed creating Stars, cars and a duck on the water using these shapes.
We continued to explore Christianity and the celebration of Christmas in R.E. We drew a gift we could give a baby if they were born in this year and compared it to the three gifts the Wise Men brought Baby Jesus at the stable, Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold. We learned why these gifts were special and were given to Baby Jesus.
"Tales Toolkit" brought to life our magical and unique imagination, where we used our creativity to expand and create possible settings for our stories, having the opportunity to draw four different settings for our characters, we have created and chosen. We cannot wait to continue to create and re-imagine our storylines.
