Year 3 have been getting stuck into some new learning over the last few weeks! They have all produced some really wonderful work - well done!
In maths, we have moved on from division and have been exploring the measurement of length. The new unit of measurement that we have studied within this is millimetres. We began by comparing with the size of different lengths (for example, are cm or mm bigger? how can you prove this?) before moving onto converting the lengths between the units of measures, for example: 5cm 7mm = 50mm+7mm = 57mm and vice versa. Once this knowledge was embedded, we moved onto to solving word problems involving length. In order to do this, we used bar models to help us to visualise the problems.
Within our English lessons, we have continued to read the story 'There's a pharaoh in our bath'. Last week, we wrote our character description but over the course of the last two weeks, we have been studying and writing a set of instructions. Our instructions have been about how to make papyrus paper. Within our instructions, we have tried to focus on a range of grammar techniques including: command sentences, imperative verbs, time adverbs and rhetorical questions. All children have shown a great understanding of what each term means and they have been able to apply it in their writing this week.
Across our foundation subjects, we have continued to learn all about our half term topics. This week in humanities, we explored the different gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt. We did this through using secondary resources such as online videos and factual websites. From this, we made our own Top Trump cards to compare the gods / godesses. In science, we have focused on the process of fossilisation. We first discussed what they term meant before looking into the actual process broken down into steps. The children were very engaged with this topic. Finally, this week in art, we designed our very own pharaoh head wear. The children used their own side profiles to then design a piece of head wear that suited their personality. As we were taking on the role of being a pharaoh, we tried to make them look luxurious with gold and jewels.
Have a lovely weekend! From the year 3 team :)
