Welcome to Year 2.
The children have been working very hard to establish new routines and are enjoying their new curriculum. They have begun reading squad and are reading three times a week in class as well as completing reading comprehension tasks in class.
In Writing, they have been exploring the books We are here, a book about the planet Earth and the story of Tiddalick the frog, an aboriginal story from Australia. We have acted out the stories, planned them and retold them.
In Maths, we have begun our Maths No Problem scheme. We have completed the first chapter, Place Value. We have explored 2 digit numbers and how they are made from tens and ones. We also explored number patterns, counting in steps of two, ten, five and three. We have begun the second chapter, Addition and Subtraction with a focus on adding using a range of practical methods.
In Science, we have begun a topic called Materials. We have explored what materials are used to make everyday objects and whether these objects are man-made or natural.
Our Geography topic is Our Wonderful World. We have been identifying the seven continents and five oceans of the world and have created a factfile about Australia.
In Art, we have collected interesting objects from the school grounds and used them to create a 3d collage. We then drew our own pictures from these materials. We have also explored line drawing and were challenged to try to draw objects and add details to them without taking our pencil off of the page.
From this week, we will be expecting the children to complete the following homework each week:
Home reading- to be recorded in their reading diaries. The children should be reading at home at least 3 times a week. Please make sure your child has their reading diary in school every day.
Spelling sheets given out on Friday. Please return by the following Friday.
Numbots - Children to complete at least 15 minutes on the Numbot programme. We have shown the children where to access Numbots and their log in details have been stuck into their reading diaries.
