Year 1
Year 1
We've had a fantastic time in Year 1 recently!
Last Tuesday, we all had a lot of fun coming to school in our odd socks to celebrate Anti-Bullying Week 2024. This year’s theme, “We Choose Respect,” aligns perfectly with our Golden Rules and how we strive to treat each other kindly. We even made some fantastic posters to remind us to choose respect every day.
Last week we also took part in the nationwide celebration of Children in Need, embracing the opportunity to make a difference while having lots of fun! Through creative activities, thoughtful discussions, and lots of smiles, the day was filled with compassion and joy!
In the past two weeks we have been starting our new and exciting Geography. We have been directing our friends using "forwards, backwards, turn left and turn right". We even had the chance to move a beebot online and use them on the carpet, sending our little bots around the mat. We have become experts in learning about our Country and how a government is used to create rules for a country. We created our own countries and got to choose which rules we would have to govern our country.
In science, we have been discovering materials around us. We had an investigation in the objects found around our school and exploring the different materials used to create them. We saw the friendship bench was made from wood and our scissors are created with more than one materials, metal and plastic! We sorted everyday materials into groups using our hula-hoops.
We took part in Road Safety this week, where we discussed the different jobs and people who help keep us safe on the roads. We learnt about how first responders, such as firefighters and police, assist us and doctors and nurses support us if we are hurt. Making sure we remember to ALWAYS wear a helmet on our bikes and scooters and to hold a grown-ups hand when crossing the road.
We started our new story 'The Three Little Pigs' where we got to practice acting as one of the characters from the story, a class favourite being 'huffing and puffing' the house down as the big bad wolf. We explored our capital letters and decided to use our creative minds to give our little pigs their own unique names.
In maths, we have been exploring our odd and even numbers. Hoping across our 'numicon numberlines' in 2's on different start points to discover our odd and even numbers. We continued to explore odd and even numbers on our Chrome books and sorting our even and odd numbers, adding them together and identifying flat top and odd top numicons to assist us in learning
We're excited to introduce our new learning theme, "Tales Toolkit." In these lessons, we'll be unleashing our imaginations and creating fantastic stories. This week, we began by dreaming up interesting characters. We thought about their names, personalities, and what makes them special. Over the coming weeks, we'll dive deeper into the world of storytelling. Next week, we'll be imagining magical settings for our tales. Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
