Year 2 have had a brilliant half term.
The children have continued to work well and are enjoying their tasks.
In Writing, they have continued to explore the book, 'The day the crayons quit, ' and its sequel ' The day the crayons came back.' They have written their own story about the crayons and how they had an adventure where one of the crayons was in danger and another crayon came to the rescue. They planned the story then wrote it over three lessons. They tried to include expanded noun phrases and key words in their work. Their stories held the readers interest and were sometimes quite funny.
In Maths, the children have been exploring using partitioning to subtract 2 digit numbers. They have also practise renaming. In subtraction, this is when there are not enough ones in the ones column so we have to take one of the ten sticks and turn them into ones before we can do the subtraction. They have also been practising adding three numbers by looking for pairs that make ten and doubles. We have just begun to look at multiplication especially multiplication by two. Regular practice of counting in 2's, 5's and 10's will help all the children in their upcoming maths activities.
In Science, they have continued to explore our topic, Materials. The children have tried to find the strongest material from a range of materials for making a bridge. They made towers from unifix cubes or diennes and placed the material across the top. They then explored how many cubes could be placed on top of the material before the bridge broke.
In Geography, the children have been discovering how the closer a country is to the equator, the hotter the country will be. They identified on a map areas that would be hot and those who were cold and could explain why this was.
In Art, the children have finished creating their final piece of art work for this topic. They have painted their wax resist and cut it out to display in their sketch books. They then held a gallery and looked at the work, commenting on the work they liked.
We will be expecting the children to complete the following homework each week:
Home reading- to be recorded in their reading diaries. The children should be reading at home at least 3 times a week. Please make sure your child has their reading diary in school every day.
Spelling sheets given out on Friday. Please return by the following Friday.
Numbots - Children to complete at least 15 minutes on the Numbot programme. We have shown the children where to access Numbots and their log in details have been stuck into their reading diaries.
