Year 4 have returned from our half term break, eager and ready to learn.
Year 4 have looked at a list of Victorian school rules to aid their writing work this week. We've written acrostic poems where the first letter of each line of the poem spells out the word Victorians. We included rhyming words, alliteration and expanded noun phrases in our poem. We all agreed that we would much rather be in our school today than in a Victorian school.
In reading, we have practised using our retrieval skills to find information in the text and use it directly in our answers. We explored two pieces of non-fiction, the first an article about Asisat Oshoala, the BBC's first female footballer of the year and the second an extract from Jonny and Alistair Brownlee's biography, focusing on their Triathlon event in the London 2012 Olympics.
In Maths, we have been expending our learning about multiplication and division. We have been focusing on what happens when we multiply by 1 and 0, when we divide by 1 or the number itself, the commutative nature of multiplication so 3 x 4 = 4 x 3 and multiplying three numbers. We have learnt chants to help remind us what happens on each occasion, e.g. If you multiply by 1, then the number stays the same. If you multiply by 0, the answer is always 0.
In Science, we have begun our new topic , Electricity. We have seen how electrical flow may come from mains electricity or batteries and have thought about the advantages and disadvantages of both types of power. We discussed how some appliances were difficult to sort into battery powered or mains powered as they have a battery which is charged using a mains lead e.g. a chromebook or a phone.
We have begun our History topic, How have children's lives changed? We will be focusing on the Tudor, Victorian and Modern periods with some reference to the Romans. This week, we sorted our timeline cards into the correct order to see when these times were in relation to times we have previously studied. We then looked at continuity through the different periods ( what has stayed the same) and what has changed over time. We also discussed the differences between primary and secondary sources and how reliable they were.
