Year 1
Year 1
It has been a busy two weeks. The children have been very excited to use their Chrome books for a variety of activities in class. In maths we have been learning about greater than and less than with Blockziller! We also explored taller, shorter, heavy and lighter using different materials and objects around the classroom. In literacy we have enjoyed learning the story "PEACE AT LAST". Through learning this story we have created story maps, simple sentences, retelling on our Chromebooks and creating our final writing piece in which we discuss our favourite parts of the story.
We have celebrated two special days these past two weeks, European Languages Day on Thursday 26th September and National Poetry Day on Thursday 3rd October. For European Languages day, we explored Turkish and created our very own bracelets and learnt some special greetings, in which we spent the rest of the week using to greet each other during the day. We also celebrated National Poetry Day in style by creating our very own classroom poems, whether drawing or writing our poem together. Emerald created the 'Silly chicken poem' and Jade created a fantastic children's poem, both counting down from 10-0 to link in with our maths.
In Science we have been continuing to find out about the seasons! We took a Autumn tree walk and learnt about Evergreen trees, which don't lose their leaves in Winter like deciduous trees. We focused on noticing seasonal changes in trees this week, how each season brings a new chapter to the trees. We discovered many Autumn leaves on the playground which helped us draw the trees in each season.
In R.E we have been learning about Christianity and how Christians believe god created the world and wants us to take care of the world. We have been practising being good care takers of our classroom and other areas of our lives. We looked at different ways we can help our planet such as planting trees, recycling and looking after our oceans. We explored the topic of things we are caretakers of, as individuals, and we saw we were caretakers of our parents, our pets, our room and our classroom.
In History we created a 'Human Timeline' according to our birthdays and then discussed our favourite ways to celebrate our special day, including unicorn cakes, balloons and a family dinner. We looked at other special events and holidays which we celebrate. Easter, Halloween and Christmas were among the favourites. We discussed what a memory is and which special memories we could recall from our Reception years or events from our past. We heard about visits to Ghana, Miss Mitchell's memories from South Africa and spider-man cakes. It was a lovely way to learn about our different childhoods and memories we each have.
