Future Home of the

Coffee and Cosmetics Laboratory

(smelling the buzz and living the dream...?)

Update - As of the end of Giving Day 2021, we have raised $1765!

Much thanks to our donors!!!

The department has committed to support a student to help design experiments and plan these investments for Fall 2021, where we plan to host this class live!

We envision a space where students learn about the basic engineering principles of material and energy balances while brewing coffee and designing cosmetic products while providing K-12 outreach and visitors a new perspective of a modern engineering curriculum.

This course was designed BY chemical engineering students FOR ALL students.

Class by Zoom has been great for those who can't be together (including international students unable to travel), but the next phase will include a hands-on approach that will give students an appreciation of consumer product engineering. Besides - who doesn't like coffee and/or cosmetics? The addition of cosmetics is intentional in its drive to recruit/retain more women in STEM. Now, we hope to expand this experience beyond the classroom into the laboratory, and in a space where we can host K-12 outreach events for CHOICES and local schools and host alumni and prospective student visitors.

The vision: What will this space offer?

  • Coffee roasting/grinding/brewing equipment

  • Cosmetic blending and packaging equipment
