Cosmetics
(not a coverup)
The second half of "Coffee & Cosmetics" focuses on -EVERYTHING- cosmetics. If you are reading this, without a doubt you use cosmetic products. Like the first half, we'll re-focus the class on student interests.
This class will cover aspects of the science/engineering of cosmetics (surface science, color/light, fragrance & flavors, soap, polymers, colloids/nanoscience, rheology (how things flow). We also talk about consumerism, product design, environmental impacts.
No background knowledge beyond HS math, physics, and chemistry is necessary.
Example videos from Spring 2021:
Cosmetics are much more than "paint for skin". They are key in preventing skin cancer and drug delivery. They also have deep cultural significance.
Topics to be introduced:
Surface properties and interfacial science
Rheological (flow) modifiers
Powder technology
Emulsion technology
Polymer properties
Sustainability efforts in the industry
