Each spring, seventh grade students who speak a language other than English have the opportunity to take the language proficiency test. This test will give students the opportunity to earn high school language credit or placement for their high school language requirement. Tests are available in a wide variety of languages and tests typically include reading, writing and speaking sections. Students who are native speakers or who have language acquisition through coursework are eligible to test. Visit the LISD World Language Program webpage for a complete list of languages eligible for testing.
Why Take the Language Proficiency Test?
Students are required to take either two or three credits of a language other than English as part of their graduation requirement. Since students are allowed to begin their language classes in 8th grade, we offer the test in the spring of the 7th grade year so that students can make appropriate choices about the 8th grade electives.
The test is available in nearly every language and is administered here on campus. It includes listening, speaking and writing components. This spring, we will offer the following testing opportunities:
Testing allows for students to earn high school credit by testing, opening up opportunities to take advanced levels of their language, pursue an additional language, or take other electives in high school. While students can earn credit, the test results have no impact on GPA. Students interested in pursuing the IB program in high school should consult with their school counselor before testing.
This test is optional, but any 7th grader who speaks another language is encouraged to take it for credit and language placement.
