Girls Pre - Athletics

Purpose:

The Leander ISD Middle Schools Pre-Athletic class is a Physical Education class which is designed to prepare 6th grade students for Leander ISD Athletic Programs while still implementing the required 6th grade PE TEKS. The purpose of the Pre-Athletics program is to provide students with an advanced curriculum directly linked to upcoming UIL sports (cross country, football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field) in which they will be eligible to participate in as 7th graders. The Pre-Athletics PE course will prepare students for the expectations associated with all aspects of LISD athletics including UIL academic requirements, sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, accountability, and character development.

Overview:

Students participating in Pre-Athletics must recognize that the workouts will build up to, and then be comparable to, the workouts we give to our 7th and 8th grade athletes. The mental and physical demands are greater than what they may experience in a regular PE class. Physically, the course will focus on athletic conditioning, strength, agility and sport-specific skills. Throughout the course, leadership skills, responsibility, academic awareness, and many other aspects will be included to ensure the development of the whole child. Most of all, 6th grade student-athletes will have fun and believe in themselves as they gain confidence through sports.

Course Outline:

Skill training, agility drills, conditioning, and weight room training will be conducted year round. Sport-specific activities and fun competitions will be done periodically throughout the year. Athletic Preview Units are optional and will include any 6th grade Pre-Athletics or PE student who wishes to participate. These units last two weeks and expose students to Athletics so they can make an educated choice as to whether or not to participate in Athletics in 7th grade.

Fall: Cross Country, Volleyball/Net sports

Winter: Basketball, Athletic Preview Unit 1

Spring: Track, Soccer, Athletic Preview Unit 2

Impact on Placement in 7th Grade Athletics:

Placement into this Pre-Athletics PE class does not automatically place a student in the athletic period for 7th grade.  Participation in this course will help students determine if they want to participate in Athletics in 7th grade.

Daily Expectations:
