The list of rules below are rules that must be followed this year whenever we are working in the lab. The purpose of these rules is to keep us and everyone safe! If you are not following these lab rules you will lose your abilitiy to continue to participate in the lab activity.
Follow all written and verbal instructions. Read all of the lab instructions thoroughly BEFORE starting a lab. Be sure that you understand them and ask questions if you do not. CLARIFY/ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN LAB!!!
Check all glassware for breaks and chips before using. If broken, tell the teacher.
Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the laboratory. Keep hands away from your face, eyes, mouth, and open cuts.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water BEFORE & AFTER performing experiments.
Never drink from the laboratory glassware.
Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including the first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket. Know where the exits are located and where the class meets in the event of a fire or fire drill.
Our class exits the school via the door labeled A1. Once outside find me and the class and stay with me until we return indoors. If you are not in the classroom when the alarm goes off, do not try to rush back to my room. Instead, exit via the nearest door and check-in with a nearby adult or find me once outside.
Notify the teacher immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe. This includes broken equipment, spills, and injuries, even if minor.
When working with chemicals, heat, or glassware, wear goggles for protection.
Do not touch materials or equipment until instructed to do so by the teacher.
If your hair covers your eyes, you must tie it back.
Report any accident or injury to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor it may appear.
Be sure to understand the possible hazards of a lab experiment before conducting it.
Perform only authorized and approved experiments! (DO NOT MAKE UP YOUR OWN LABS!)
Set up equipment away from table edges to avoid dropping it on the floor.
Read all labels TWICE before using them.
Never mix chemicals together unless the instructions tell you to do so.
Know the location of the eyewash station and how to operate it. If chemicals splash in your eyes, immediately remove contacts and flush your eyes with running water from the eyewash station for 15 minutes. Notify the teacher.
Never handle broken glass with your bare hands; use a dustpan and brush. Place broken glass into the box under the corner sink, not in the trash. If you break any glass, notify the teacher immediately!
DO not put pencils, pens, or fingers in your mouth when working in the lab.
Shoes must cover the entire foot. No open-toed shoes or sandals are permitted during a lab.
When heating liquids, aim the top of the container away from yourself and others if using a test tube. Steam and splashes from hot liquids can burn you. Never touch hot containers with your bare hands; use tongs or mitts instead.
Do not smell any chemicals by placing them directly under your nose. Waft it instead.
Always clean your lab equipment and workspace after you finish a lab experiment or activity.
WHEN IN DOUBT ASK MS. HUDSON!!!
