How much are people willing to sacrifice for the truth?
How do you persuade others to your truth?
Unit Overview
Students will explore these questions in a range of texts from multiple genres.
The anchor text for this unit is The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, and students will select a book club book or an independent reading book.
The unit lessons will teach the rhetorical triangle, persuasive writing, detecting bias, fact versus opinion, exposition, theme, and characterization as key literary elements.
For their culminating assessment, students will select one of their truths and persuade others of its importance and impact by utilizing ethos, pathos, and logos through a persuasive essay, open letter, podcast, or film.
Students will also engage in a Socratic Seminar centered around their questions and discussions of the anchor text.
