The Local Creative Youth Partnership is calling young people from Clare and Limerick to join us on an adventure to celebrate the great Shannon Estuary - a body of water that gives identity to both counties. We have put together a four-day creative youth programme that takes its energy, inspiration and cultural context from the traditions, stories and songs of the Shannon Estuary and, most importantly, from yourselves.
We have heard some of your voices, through discussions about creativity, in your youth clubs and centres and we are now responding to some of your suggestions around the kinds of creative things that young people enjoy. We have heard your requests and concerns about environment, identity, popular culture and tradition and what better way to celebrate the heritage shared by both counties, than by bringing to Kilrush and Foynes, the Shannon’s sole surviving sailing vessel the Ilen. Over two days in Kilrush and a further two days in Foynes, you can join us to take part in creative workshops in music, dance, song and story on board and near the Ilen.
In Limerick City, you can go see the very popular photographic exhibition, A Day in the Life of Rathkeale in different locations around Pery Square, in the Limerick City Gallery of Art, The People’s Museum of Limerick and in various locations around the People’s Park. In Ennis, young people will show their talents through a mural project in Clare Youth Service Carmody Street Youth Café.
You can try out a Music Generation workshop in Kilrush or Foynes, catch a movie in the pop-up cinema in Kilrush, join one of Tobi Omoteso’s hip-hop dance workshops in a number of locations or sign up for one of The Hunt Museum’s Drawatorium sessions. All workshops will be carried out in safely monitored spaces, closely observing government guidelines around social distancing, sanitising and in line with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board's Child Safety procedures. We are very grateful to our supporters and partners who are collaborating with us in so many ways to bring you this youth festival.
We hope to see you on either side of the Shannon Estuary to watch or participate in the first Scairt na hÓige festival, celebrating youth creativity across Limerick and Clare. Click on the programme cover image below to download a copy of the complete festival programme.
