Each month, we will introduce one of the Lab's Employee Resource Groups and how it adds to the diversity of the Lab, one of its Operations division and how it supports science, and one of its science research areas and its current projects.

Blake Simmons is director of Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering division and the Chief Science & Technology Officer at the Joint BioEnergy Institute. He shares how he became the executive sponsor of the Latin American and Native American (LANA) employee resource group in 2019.

Minh Huebner is the Lab’s Chief Financial Officer, overseeing over 200 employees and a billion-dollar Lab budget. Read how her team collaborates with research and operations to manage large projects and everyday purchases to keep the Lab focused on its mission.

Accelerators are a vital part of modern science and are used in industry and medicine as well. ATAP Division Director Cameron Geddes discusses how accelerators are designed and built and the prospect of additional scientific discovery using a tool at the heart of the Lab's origin.

The Projects and Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) is one of the Lab’s newest divisions, tasked with building and/or renewing the Lab’s infrastructure to meet mission needs. Division Director Todd Hancock shares PIMD’s goals and plans for the future in this conversation.

The raising of the rainbow-colored flag in celebration of Pride Month started at Berkeley Lab over 20 years ago. This year however, Lambda Alliance - the Lab’s Employee Resource Group and Activities Association that supports Sexual-orientation and Gender Minorities (SGMs) - opted to do something a little different to mark the beginning of Pride Month.

The Energy Sciences Area (ESA) provides critical resources and conducts fundamental research related to chemistry and materials sciences. Jeff Neaton, the ESA’s Associate Lab Director, discusses the Area’s team science focus and its priorities.



The Sustainable Berkeley Lab team collaborates with partners site-wide to reduce the Lab’s climate, waste, and water footprint. John Elliott heads the team as the Lab’s Chief Sustainability Officer, a role that was created when John joined the Lab in 2012. Biosciences research has had an illustrious history at Berkeley Lab. Today, Biosciences Area scientists and engineers continue to contribute groundbreaking discoveries and innovative solutions to complex scientific and societal challenges in energy, environment, health, and biomanufacturing. The policy, networking and empowerment activities within the Women Scientists and Engineers Council (WSEC) contribute in many ways to Berkeley Lab’s mission. Susan Hubbard, WSEC Executive Co-Sponsor, discusses the group’s priorities and partnerships.
