safety & security

9-1-1

If you call 911 from a location on the Lab's hill site, the call will go to the UC Berkeley Police Department, and the appropriate emergency response -- medical, fire, or police -- will be dispatched to the Lab location.

If you call x6999 from a Lab phone, or 1-510-486-6999 from a mobile or non-Lab phone, the call goes to the Lab’s Security Operations Center or SOC which is staffed 24 hours a day. The call is triaged for an appropriate response.

If you are offsite, a 911 call will go to the appropriate local public safety agency. If you do call 911 from an offsite location, please follow up with a call to 1-510-486-6999 to let the SOC know about the emergency.

If you dial 911 by mistake, do not hang up. Stay on the line and let the operator know it was a misdial. If you hang up the emergency provider will call back. If you don't answer they will send an emergency responder to the address to make sure there is no emergency.  Stay on the line if you misdial.

LAB ALERT

LabAlert provides timely emergency alerts to the Lab community via email, telephone, and text message on Lab-issued or private cellular telephones.

As an employee of the Lab, your work contact information is entered automatically into LabAlert. You can also receive notifications on your personal mobile device for potential laboratory closures, general emergency information, or potential impacts to the building you reside in.

OUTDOOR CAMERAS

Physical security is important at the Lab as a means of protecting the Lab's people and its resources. Outdoor cameras have been added to the grounds of the Lab, and additional physical security measures are being implemented in the next few years.

SAFE BUILDINGS

SAFE buildings are those on the Lab's hill site that have been evaluated to provide the best environment in case of a fast-moving wildfire that will not allow people to safely evacuate the site. There are 19 buildings that are marked with blue signs that read SAFE. These buildings are constructed of steel or concrete, have interiors sprinkler systems, defensible space outside that is clear of bushes and shrubs, and have ventilation systems that can be set to reduce outside air to stop smoke intake.

SAFETY CHECKLIST

Safety is part of Lab culture and is planned into every action we take. The Lab's hill site has uneven ground, hilly terrain, and outdoor staircases, among other safety challenges. Take the time to stay safe. Use this handy checklist as a start on your personal safety plan.

SMOKING AREAS

Smoking is only allowed in one of the 19 designated smoking areas at the Lab's hill site. These sites are paved and have containers for the disposal of smoking materials. Disposing of cigarette butts in wooden posts, vegetation, and trees is not smart. A wildland fire on Lab property can move quickly, destroying the beauty of the Lab and spreading to our neighbors.
