Physical Computing, MakerSpaces, and PaperMech projects:
I am very happy to have implemented the use of physical computing through the use of Microbits. Having compiled enough resources of my own through grants and participation in prior trainings with organizations like InfoSys and FiriasLabs, I had enough Microbits and external devices for two classrooms to run projects simultaneously. Microbits are a wonderful way to integrate CS coding with curricular connections to STEAM education.
Complemented by the use of PaperMech to create and cut cardboard machines with a Cricut cutter, LEDs, DC motors, and sound devices, physical computing took on a life of its own. Students created wonderful art pieces they could code to control and developed through storytelling/storyboard ELA/ELD techniques. To make their machines they had to participate in MakerSpace sessions and make heavy use of Engineering (mechanical and electronic) to make their physical creations work.
Next Step....to build our own robots!
