A Message from Mr. Rome
Dear Sun Valley Community,
With the number of Covid cases increasing dramatically in Los Angeles County these past weeks, it is more important than ever that we stay focused on staying safe and keeping our loved ones healthy. Because of the rising numbers, the decision was made to close campuses to all students and staff. The good news is that remote lessons will continue as before and school administrators and staff are still available by phone and email if needed.
LAUSD Covid testing and Grab and Go food distribution will continue. Please take advantage of the opportunity to get a free COVID test for you or members of your household. I am getting tested weekly. By testing, we are helping to control the spread of the virus and keeping our families safe. If you know you are infected, you can take steps to prevent the transmission to others around you by isolating yourself and seeking medical attention if you test positive.
Families can make an appointment for a free test at https://lausd-rts.powerappsportals.com/en-US/bookonline-guest/
I hope everyone has safe and happy holidays.
I am certain that 2021 will be a better year for all of us.
Thank you

Community Building
Using Restorative Practices
The Power of "I" Statements
When parents communicate with their children in a calm manner, it is easier for the child to listen, understand and to put into action a parent's request. Using "I statements" are an effective way of conveying feelings related to requests, limits and giving children feedback.
Expressing limits and requests with care helps a child feel nurtured and involved as opposed to forced or controlled. Instead of saying, "You never complete your homework", try an I statements like, "I feel concerned when you don't complete your homework, because I know you are capable of achieving great things. I would like you to have your homework completed before you turn on the TV."
Using "I statements" benefit both parent and child. With practice, parents can learn to self regulate and be more calm and patient Children learn to identify how they feel, name the emotion, listen to other's perspectives and express what they need, want and expect from others. For more examples, please watch the video on the left.

COVID Testing for Students and Families
The testing is free, easy and convenient. We have a testing center at Pacoima Middle School.
Testing helps combat the coronavirus by allowing infected people to seek treatment early and take necessary steps to avoid spreading it. Let's do our part!
COVID testing prepares our schools and our community for the return to campus once public health conditions allow.
Have you and your child been tested? Make an appointment today?
