Helping Your Kids Emotionally Return to Campus
For many parents and students alike, the decision to return to campus after more than one calendar year of being away is daunting. While COVID numbers are decreasing and vaccinations are increasing, there is still apprehension about the new normal. Here are some ideas to help make the transition easier.
Plan Ahead
First, make sure that you child is COVID tested within seven days of returning to campus. Make sure your child understands the safety precautions - daily pass, social distancing and hand-washing. It may help to have an extra mask or two in case of accidents.
Discuss Their Concerns
Have a family meeting to talk with you children about their worries, fears or excitement. What is something they are looking forward to ? What is something they are not looking forward to? Listen to their ideas and be supportive.
Check in With Your Child to Assess Emotional Well-being
The trauma inflicted by this pandemic may have long-term impact. Students of all ages are experiencing anxiety and depression at an alarming rate. Parents should check on their children periodically and look for indicators like irritability, lack of motivation, depression, difficulty sleeping and concerns about safety. LAUSD has many resources both on-campus and referrals for mental health support. If you are in doubt, we encourage you to have you child assessed.
Be Flexible
Not only will the transition back to campus be stressful to you and your family, everyone from teachers to administrators to custodial staff and office staff will feel the stress as well. Protocols at the District or school level may change as more information is gathered. Please be ready to adapt and model a calm demeanor to your children despite the inevitable hiccups from re-opening.
Be Present and Consistent
Now, more than ever before, your children need stability. Try to be present, predictable and consistent. You may be the only part of their lives that feels normal. Structure and routine go a long way in helping children through traumatic events. Make every attempt to convey compassion, warmth and calm.
Meet Citlali Flores from V.O.C.E.S.
Citlali is a junior at Valley Oaks Center for Enriched Studies where she is co-president of the Eco club, a member of the honor society and an athlete on the softball and basketball teams. In addition to showing leadership as president, Citlali demonstrates leadership by performing the task of circle keeper, leading her peers in community- building in Mr. Palare's class. She enjoys this since she sees it as therapeutic, giving the entire class the opportunity to share ideas and opinions.
After high school, Citlali would like to attend her dream college, UC Santa Barbara. Why UCSB? She fell in love with the campus during a visit in 9th grade and plans to study a business related field and open a cafe after graduating.
A fun fact about Citlali is although she considers herself an introvert, once she feels comfortable with people she becomes an extrovert and finds it difficult to stop talking.

COVID Testing for Students and Families
The testing is free, easy and convenient. We have a testing center at Pacoima Middle School.
Testing helps combat the coronavirus by allowing infected people to seek treatment early and take necessary steps to avoid spreading it. Let's do our part!
COVID testing prepares our schools and our community for the return to campus once public health conditions allow.
Have you and your child been tested? Make an appointment today?

Planning for Return to In-Person Instruction at School
There is much to do for families in preparing for the return to school. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has created a useful In-Person Checklist to assist you in your planning and preparation. It is available in both ENGLISH and SPANISH .
As we know, appropriate and consistent use of masks may be challenging for some children. Wearing masks at school will be required, and some practice wearing them prior to returning to school will be very helpful. Here we highlight some hints and tips regarding masks for young children. Please follow the links above to find additional information on masks as well as other preparations you can do at home for all students. We are all excited to see you back!
· If you have a young child, help build their comfort wearing a mask and become comfortable seeing others in masks.
o Praise your child for wearing a mask correctly.
o Put a mask on stuffed animals.
o Draw a mask on a favorite book character.
o Show images of other children wearing masks.
o Allow your child to choose their mask that meets any dress requirements your school may have.
· Consider providing your child with a container (e.g., labeled resealable bag) to bring to school to store their masks when not wearing it (e.g., when eating).
