A Message from Mr. Rome

Dear Sun Valley Community,

This week LA County announced that COVID infection rates have decreased enough in the Los Angeles area to allow elementary schools to reopen. This is good news. Los Angeles Unified leadership is working to finalize plans to begin a gradual reopening of campuses. We expect to have more details about these plans very soon.

One of the challenges of reopening immediately is that while the average number of cases in LA County has decreased, there are still communities within LAUSD that are quite high. Therefore, we are moving forward cautiously to ensure that when we open, students and staff will be truly safe. Superintendent Beutner is committed to having all staff vaccinated before campuses fully open. Schools are ready with upgraded ventilation systems, screening procedures and protocols for social distancing in place.

More information about the timeline to reopen will be coming soon. Please stay tuned. I encourage you to attend our monthly town hall meetings for the latest developments on the return to campus plan.

Thank you,

John Rome

spotlight on student engagement

  • Our administrators frequently visit Zoom sessions to support our students and teachers in the classroom. We especially look to see how engaged students are.

  • Principals, Mr. Rome and Mr. Avery visited numerous schools during January and February. The following are some of our findings:

How many Zoom cameras were on in each classroom?

  • Elementary school classrooms have the highest number of cameras on.

  • Students, remember that your teacher teaches better when she/he can see you. (Nobody likes taking to a blank screen!)

  • Parents, please encourage your child to turn on the camera unless he/she has a good reason to keep it off.

What level of engagement were most students at during the observations?

Click here to learn about the levels of engagement.

  • Most of our students participated by doing what teachers asked of them. There are two levels that are higher than participating- investing and driving. Students can move to the level of investing in their own learning by:

      • Volunteering to read or to share answers;

      • Asking questions;

      • Using hand gestures, chat and reaction buttons without the teacher asking them to; and

      • Working with classmates in breakout rooms

  • In around 1/5 of classrooms it was unclear if students were participating. This is in part due to cameras being off and students not participating in the discussion. Students can show participation by:

      • Completing school tasks;

      • Unmuting when the teacher calls on them; and

      • Answering with hand gestures, reaction buttons, or in the chat when the teacher asks them to

Does your child watch videos on YouTube?

AEIOU is a teaching strategy that asks students to interpret information from images or videos they have viewed and write down their thoughts next to five descriptive categories. Watch this student video to see how this strategy works and how we can engage our children in learning while they watch their favorite YouTube channels.

Love Languages

Almost three decades ago, Dr. Gary Chapman developed a method to determine how people best demonstrate their love to others and the various ways that they feel loved. He opined that there were five love languages. The five languages of love include: physical touch, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and words of affirmation. (See the examples on the left.) These love languages apply to all of your relationships - with friends, your spouse, your children and even your co-workers.

Not surprisingly, love languages are not always fixed. Regular communication can help you decipher the love that you need to show your children and loved ones to keep their love tank full. Each person in your family may have a different love language and need a different approach to feel loved. For a quick quiz on love languages, try this quiz.

Meet Isela Ocampo, Parent Center Coordinator at Vinedale College Preparatory Academy! Ms. Ocampo has the distinction of also being an alumnus of Vinedale having attended elementary school there. Working as a parent rep for seven years, she enjoys her job because of the caring, friendly, diverse community. She takes pride in sharing resources with families from offering computer support, to providing outside services for families in need, to talking with parents who simply need an empathic listener to talk to. One of the most enjoyable parts of her job is the natural setting of the Vinedale campus, located at the edge of the mountains. One of her fondest memories was watching a mother deer give birth to a fawn.
