Sun Valley Community of Schools Administrator
A Message from Mr. Rome
Dear Sun Valley Community,
I'd like to share an encouraging update in our efforts to return students to school campuses but need your help with the implementation.
We are asking all parents to complete a Program Selection Form online for each of their children by Sunday, December 6th. The Program Selection Form can be found at the following link: https://reopening.lausd.net/familyselection.
The Program Selection Form lets your child’s school know if you plan to send your child back to campus when schools reopen or if you plan to have your child continue with remote only instruction. All schools will be offering both hybrid instruction on campus and a remote only option.
The live instruction program on campus is referred to as a hybrid option on the form because it will be a combination of students reporting to campus on certain days of the week for live instruction and also completing independent work at home on other days.
Unfortunately, it is not possible[FC1] to have all students attend class on campus at the same time due to social distancing requirements. In order for students to maintain at least 6 feet distance from each other, we will need to organize students into consistent cohorts that will be on campus on different days.
More information about the two program options being offered can be found in the LAUSD Return to Campus Family Guide found in the next section.
In addition to social distancing, students and staff on campus will be implementing critical health safety protocols including wearing masks, frequent hand washing and sanitizing.
As you can imagine, principals need time to prepare their campuses for students to return. It is imperative that they know how many families plan to select the hybrid model as soon as possible to inform their planning.
The District understands that we are asking parents to select a program without specific information about the daily schedule. Many parents have asked what days of the week and what times of the day their child will attend school if they select the hybrid program. At this point in the planning process, we don’t have this specific information to share. Your submission of the Program Selection Form by December 6th will help us move forward with this planning and finalize these important details. Schools will be sharing information as soon as we have it.
Currently, the number of COVID cases in LA County does not allow for schools to reopen. Superintendent Beutner has indicated that schools will not be reopening this semester. District officials are in continuous communication with LA County health experts for guidance on when it will be safe to reopen. If the health data improves and we get closer to a return to campus, we will share details about the timeline with you.
Thank you for your patience through this challenging time. We know that closing schools is a tremendous burden on families. Know that we are eager to open schools as soon as it is safe.
Look for virtual parent meetings at your school site during the week of November 30 to hear more information about the specific planning your school is doing to prepare for reopening.
Thank you,
Preparing to Return to Campus
Which Option Will You Choose for Your Child?
We are preparing for the eventual return of students to campus once health conditions allow for it.
Read about our commitment to safety as well as instructional options for your child in the Return to Campus Family Guide.
You will be asked to select whether you want your child to participate in the Hybrid Learning Option or the Online Only Learning Option once we return to campus. Read about the options in "A Day in the Life," a guide to our two instructional programs once we return.
You will need your child's District identification number to complete the Online Selection Form. You will find it on your child's report cards. Click here (for English) or here (for Spanish) or call your child's school if you have difficulty finding the number.
Fill Out your Online Program Selection Form by December 6th!
Have you and your children been covid tested?
LAUSD is offering testing for all students, parents and employees.
The testing is free, easy and convenient. We have a testing center at Pacoima Middle School. See flyers for expanded hours and pop-up sites.
Testing helps combat the coronavirus by allowing infected people to seek treatment early and take necessary steps to avoid spreading it. Let's do our part!
COVID testing prepares our schools and our community for the return to campus once public health conditions allow.
Have you and your child been tested? Make an appointment today?

Google Suite of Apps
Your child may be using Google Suite of Apps during both their synchronous, the time they are on Zoom with their teacher, and asynchronous, the work they do independently. Google's suite of applications is an incredible tool that allows the teacher to monitor and give feedback on student work, even from afar. Students can also work collaborative on presentations using Google Slides, where they are editing the same document at the same time while sitting in front of a computer in their own homes. Watch the video to get a great overview of all the apps.

How is our child's school doing? Every family is asked to complete a School Experience Survey to let us know.
The School Experience Survey is an annual survey administered in the fall to all LAUSD schools. Survey results provide schools with important feedback from teachers, staff, students and parents.
To protect the health and safety of everyone in the LAUSD school community, all parents are highly encouraged to complete their survey online if possible.
Parents can access the ONLINE Parent Survey by:
Clicking on the appropriate Parent Survey button
Choosing your child’s school from a drop-down menu to begin the survey.
The School Experience Survey Deadline Has Been Extended Until January 22, 2021

Topic of the Week: WELLNESS
WELLNESS TIPS: HOW TO NAVIGATE THE ‘NEW NORMAL
Navigating “new normals” in the midst of a pandemic is extremely difficult. Everything from working norms to parenting norms have changed, however, there are intentional methods that may provide ease during this transition. Remember, you are not alone! Everyone is navigating these new normals together.
Create new routines: A daily routine or schedule can help renew some normalcy of life. Carve out realistic timeframes for work, breaks and family time.
Virtual coffee: Schedule time to have a virtual cup of coffee with your coworkers. This could be a great time to share self-care tips, have a virtual contest or let organic conversation lead.
Unplug on nights and weekends: If you are working from home, you may have found yourself more connected to your email and work projects than you were previously. Remember it is essential to your mental health to unplug and take time away from work responsibilities.
Create virtual playdates: Parents may find it difficult to get uninterrupted time to work during their children’s waking hours. Alleviate some of this pressure by scheduling virtual playdates with family, friends and classmates.
Acknowledge your feelings and be flexible: Some days may be more difficult than others, give yourself grace, and be flexible to unexpected change.
Meet Amy Wiese, Community Health Manager for Kaiser Permanente. Ms. Wiese oversees several programs that positively impact students, staff and teachers in the Sun Valley Area. Ms. Wiese recently collaborated with Sun Valley principals to share the ways in which Kaiser Permanente could support wellness in our community of schools.
Rise Up is an online program employs theater and the arts to develop supportive relationships, refram challenging behavior and assist students in developing self-regulation techniques so teachechers and educators can become the best versions of themselves.
Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theater has served Southern California for over thirty years. The theater presents a variety of topics targeted to all grade spans from kindergarten where students learn to build literacy skills to 12 grade where students learn about STDs.
Additionally, Ms. Wiese shared her enthusiasm and support for getting her colleagues in the medical and administrative field to participate in career fairs for students to learn more about various jobs and planting the seed for future success.
Meet Eidy Hemmati, our new Instructional Specialist!
I am your new Instructional Specialist, supporting the Sun Valley and Sunland/Tujunga Community of Schools. This year marks my 17th year in LAUSD. In my 13 years of teaching Elementary School, I taught 1st grade through 5th grade. Prior to joining the Sun Valley Community of Schools I supported schools as a Title III Instructional Coach. That experience allowed me to support teachers of English Learners and their students. In this role I look forward to expanding my support to teachers of all students. I am a proud product of LAUSD. I believe that education is a gateway to a better future for our students. I look forward to the work ahead and to the collective impact the COS can have on the academic achievement of students.
