A Message from Mr. Rome
Dear Sun Valley Families and Staff,
LAUSD needs your help. We are asking that all students and staff members please make an appointment to get tested for COVID-19. Even if you are not planning to be on campus in the near future, you can help contribute to the District’s effort to create a system for testing and tracing students and staff on campus.
If we are ever going to be able to return safely to campus, we will need to know that students and staff on campus are virus free. Our public health partners tell us that we must test 20,000 people a day in the District in order to have the necessary data to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Building a large-scale system to test and trace students and staff in no easy feat. We want this system working seamlessly when we return to campus. By getting a test now, we can help the District work out all the logistics needed to have the system fully operational by the time we are ready to open. Testing sites need to practice with larger volumes of traffic, testing samples need to be sent out and results returned in a timely manner and the District’s system for ensuring that only individuals who test negative are allowed to enter campuses needs to be finalized.
To schedule an appointment to be tested or to have your child tested free of charge, please go to https://achieve.lausd.net/covidtestingappt.
Currently the testing location for the Sun Valley Community of Schools is Pacoima Middle School. More locations will be opening soon. I was tested at the Pacoima Middle School site and I can report that it was safe and fast and that I received my results within 24 hours.
The pandemic has given us all a sense of powerlessness. We see the news and wonder if our lives will ever return to normal. Getting tested is one way you can do something to make a difference in the fight against the pandemic and help get our schools open again. Getting tested will help the District build the structures and systems that we need to ensure that students and staff can return to campus safely in the future.
Thank you,
John Rome

Chromebook Tip: View two windows at the same time
During synchronous class time, when the students are with their teacher on Zoom, they may need to see the teacher's camera and work on their Schoology assignment or a Google Doc. The video here shows students a simple way to quickly get two windows side by side on their Chromebooks.

Resources for Parents of Students with Disabilities
October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month
Not All Great Minds Think Alike
Did you know that Albert Einstein couldn't read until he was nine? Walt Disney, General George Patton, and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller had trouble reading all their lives. Whoopi Goldberg and Charles Schwab and many others have learning disabilities which haven't affected their ultimate success.
Learning Disabilities Awareness Month is a time when the nation turns its attention to creating greater awareness of children and adults with learning disabilities. According to the National Institute of Health, 15 percent of the U.S. population, or one in seven Americans, has some type of learning disability. What exactly is a learning disability? A learning disability is a neurological disorder. In simple terms, a learning disability results from a difference in the way a person's brain is "wired." Children with learning disabilities are as smart or smarter than their peers. But they may have difficulty reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling and/or organizing information if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways.

Creating a positive learning environment during remote learning at home (part 2)
Below are additional resources that can support parents in creating and maintaining a positive learning environment:PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING EXPERIENCE
For your student, remote learning is likely a new experience and may feel isolating or disconnected. Let them know that technical issues are inevitable, and keep tabs on what your student needs. If they are enjoying the independence of learning remotely, encourage them. If they seem hesitant or unsure, they may need someone there to share the experience with them. You can help support their transition by sitting in for parts of their classes to keep them company. When they seem more settled, let them know you need to go get your own work done and you’ll be back to check in later on.
SCHEDULE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SOCIAL INTERACTION
Physical and social activity are essential to your child’s wellbeing, and they need to be prioritized even more now that we are in remote learning. Scheduling time for movement, social interaction, and play helps your child have a positive experience at home and helps them focus when it’s time to sit down in front of the computer.
Create a family dance, Act out a scene from a book, Play your favorite game, Cook or bake your family’s favorite recipe
CONNECT WITH THEIR INSTRUCTORS
For now you no longer have the opportunity of crossing paths with school staff during drop off and pick up, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to hear from you. If you have questions or concerns about your student’s progress, please send an email or schedule a video call to discuss with their teacher. And don’t hesitate to reach out to the teacher or the principal if there’s a technical issue you can’t solve during class.
Community Building
Using Restorative Practices
Mindfulness is the ability to focus on the here and now, to be present in the moment. Too often we worry about things that we cannot change from the past or things that may never happen in the future. Mindfulness reduces stress, fosters self awareness and allows one to maximize their potential. Feeling stressed out from dealing with all your responsibilities? Please take a moment to look at one of the three short videos below to learn more about mindfulness and practice it for yourself.

What is happening in artsakh/armenia?
A Q&A on an international issue that is affecting our community
We have many students of Armenian heritage in our Sun Valley Community of Schools. This is a brief summary about recent events that are impacting our student body.
Q: Where is Artsakh?
A: Artsakh (internationally known as Nagorno-Karabakh) is nestled in between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Q: What is the history of Artsakh?
A: The Armenian population is indigenous to Artsakh, where they have lived since the 5th century B.C. Numerous historical artifacts, such as Armenian monasteries, date back to the 4th century (nkrus.org).
Q: Why does Azerbaijan believe that Artsakh is theirs?
A: In the 1920s, the USSR gave Nagorno-Karabakh to Soviet Azerbaijan (in hopes of gaining the favor of Turkey). On December 10th, 1991, a referendum was held for Artsakh's independence from Azerbaijan; it passed by majority vote (de Waal).
Q: What is happening in that region right now?
A: Fighting is occurring between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan launched an offensive on Artsakh on Sept. 27. The three-week-old conflict has settled into a brutal war of attrition. The shelling and missile barrages into the towns in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan have killed dozens of civilians and hundreds of soldiers. (NY Times).
This conflict has caused stress and anxiety for our community. LDNE and our community of schools have been supporting schools with resources to support our families. The following are some additional resources:
November 3 is Election Day, but you don't have to wait to vote!
All registered voters should have received a vote by mail ballot in the mail. You can vote today by filling it out and sending it in.
Did you forget to register? You can still vote by filling out a Conditional Voter Registration!
All registered voters may vote in person on Election Day or before election day at a Vote Center.
A few Vote Centers open on October 24th, including sites in Van Nuys, Mission Hills, and Burbank.
All Vote Centers open on October 30th.
Measure RR is a school upgrades and safety bond measure that will be decided by voters living within the boundaries of LAUSD schools.
Meet Rony Morales, PS Supervisor from Byrd Middle School at the Grab and Go Zone!
Mr. Morales has 10 months working for the District as a playground supervisor at Byrd Middle School. He first started to work for The Fernangeles and Panorama City Recreation Food Centers before starting his employment at Byrd Middle School.
Mr. Morales started working at the recreation centers because he wanted to help all the families within his community. Mr. Morales has a selfless heart, and he starts every day by working at the Grab and Go center at Byrd Middle School to provide the best service to our community of families within our district. Shortly after, he is off to continue his contributions at the recreation parks. He starts by ensuring that the parking traffic is running smooth for all the families to get in and out of the recreation centers. Plus, by taking boxes of food Monday through Friday; makes him happy knowing he is helping families. He spends his own time at food banks helping as a volunteer to help our community and says he enjoys doing so, " Especially during this pandemic".
Thank you Mr. Morales for making a difference. We appreciate you!
