Since the EJ semester has ended, I have co-run L.E.A.F., Laurel's environmental action club. We focus on spreading awareness of environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices within our school community.
Sweets with the Senator
My L.E.A.F. co-leaders and I hosted Senator Kent Smith, minority whip in the Ohio Senate, to speak to members of the Upper School about his political and professional experience with an emphasis on his work to push forward environmentally beneficial legislation.
Upper School Compost Initiatives
This year, L.E.A.F. has been working to reinstate and improve Laurel's compost system, including implementing a system that allows families to bring their home compost to school to be relocated to an official compost site.
The Green Grounds Initiative
This year, L.E.A.F. forged a collaboration with OCC, Laurel's entrepreneurial café, to further their sustainability efforts. So far, this has included replacing single-use plastic materials with fair trade, compostable ones, implementing a discount for students who bring reusable cups, a letter-writing campaign urging coffee corporations to become more sustainable, and a merch collaboration.
