A central part of the Environmental Justice Semester was small-group collaboration with community organizations. My group partnered with ACE, Action for the Climate Emergency, and established the goal of addressing the disproportionate effects of poor air quality in Cleveland on marginalized communities. With this goal in mind, we researched local legislation and identified a bill that would be harmful to Ohio air quality, House Bill 201, and publicly advocated against it.
I co-authored an op-ed detailing the policies and detriments of HB 201. We submitted our piece to our local news outlet and it was selected for publication.
As part of the semester's curriculum, I learned to use ArcGIS technology, which was useful for seeing the concentrations of poor air quality and related ailments on specific Cleveland neighborhoods. The platform also allowed me to create an interactive Story Map showing my research and process within the Action project.
My group created a public petition in opposition to HB 201 which garnered over 500 signatures.
