Beginning in the EJ Semester, my peers and I, alongside our mentor, Angela Yeager, planned the first annual Northeast Ohio Youth Climate Summit. I took on the role of Lead Student Event Coordinator. The summit hosted 100 students from various Ohio schools and featured keynote speaker Xiye Bastida, various breakout rooms, and other interactive programming. Currently, we are in the beginning stages of planning the second annual Youth Climate Summit, which will have an expanded capacity of 300 students.
Planned and Facilitated Breakout Room
My classmate and I created an interactive breakout room about the intersections of environmental and social issues and how marginalized communities may be uniquely affected by consequences of climate change. We collaborated with Chaz Stephens, a leader of the Sierra Club's Ohio chapter.
Organized Internship/Volunteer Fair
I reached out to and communicated with several local organizations to host an internship/volunteer opportunity fair at the summit. This required organized and sustained communication with 10+ organizations, as well as deep logistical understanding of the event.
Raised $7,500
Through my direct communication with John Mitterholzer of the Gund Foundation, I secured a $7,500 grant to be added to the summit's budget.
I was honored with the duty of presenting opening remarks at the beginning of the summit. The content of these remarks included my feelings towards the event and a call to action for youth against climate change.
