Student Life at SCWA
Every morning students start the day with their Form Tutor in Tutor time or assembly. This time is an important opportunity for tutors
to form close relationships with their tutees. During the half hour session, tutors check uniform and equipment and ensure students are prepared for their learning.
The character development programme in Tutor Time offers an opportunity for tutors to speak with students about their interests and
the qualities we want to foster in our students to become active members in society, enabling students to understand and reflect on their own personal values and moral compass.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
Alongside other academies within the Leigh Academies Trust we are authorised to deliver the International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme (IB MYP). This means that we are an IB World School, joining over 4,700 schools worldwide in delivering IB Programmes.
The content delivered across Key Stage 3 is consistent with the UK National Curriculum, however, the IB MYP acts as a vehicle through
which this content is delivered. The Programme develops inquiring, knowledgeable, caring and compassionate young people who help to
create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy staff are excited to be working with Academies across the LAT to ensure that we deliver a challenging
programme of global education and rigorous assessment, whilst holistically addressing students intellectual, social emotional and physical
wellbeing.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) comprises eight subject groups:
Language acquisition Language and literature.
Individuals and societies Sciences
Mathematics Arts
Physical and health education Design

The Importance of Reading
We want to generate a love of reading and recognise that reading skill is key for students’ life chances. It is vital that students continue to read at home for the duration of their secondary school career and parents have a significant part to play in developing the habit of reading in our children. The below offers information and advice to support you in this.
How long should my child be reading for and how regularly?
Students should aim to read for at least 15 minutes per day. They will be given chances to read in school in tutor time and in a fortnightly library session. Students can access the library at break and lunchtimes to read and borrow books.
How can I help my child develop the habit of reading?
● Let them read to you or read together by alternating pages/paragraphs.
● Read the same book as they are so that you can talk to them about things that happen in it and interesting issues that come up.
● Encourage them to read to their younger siblings or a pet!
● Treat them to a book every month/half term. Perhaps take them to a really nice bookshop and let them choose one, whilst teaming it up with a hot chocolate!
● Understand how the AR system works (see below) and encourage them to take quizzes at home. (see instructions below)
● Use www.bookfind.co.uk to help them find books that they would like to read. (Instructions below)
● Make sure they have joined a local library so that they can borrow books both electronically and in hard copy
● Download some sort of reading/ebook app onto any device that they might have
● Encourage them to listen to audiobooks or use the ‘read to me’ function on myON (see below).
● Use the following link to access recommended age appropriate book lists: https://schoolreadinglist.co.uk/category/secondary-ks3-ks4- reading-lists/
● Use the following link to find books that are similar to other books that they have enjoyed: https://www.thereaderteacher.com/bookmatch
What are myON and Accelerated Reader?
SCWA has purchased two programmes to assist students with their reading. All students in year 7-11 can access myON and students in years 7 and 8 also have a login for Accelerated Reader. Their username and password are the same for both systems.
What is myON?
This is an online platform that offers a large volume of online library books along with daily news articles for students to read. It can be accessed on any electronic device and also has a function that turns the text into an audio book so that it can be read to the student as they follow if he/she prefers.
How does my child access myON from home?
● Go to www.myon.co.uk
● Enter the school name, student username and password when directed. The following video gives an overview of how it works. Student Video Demo To read through a parent guide please see: Parent Guide To MyON
What is Accelerated Reader? (Years 7 and 8 only)
Accelerated Reader is a system that enables students to read books that are appropriate for their reading level. Many internationally published books have a book level. Students complete a reading assessment and as a result are given their ZPD range. This is the book level that they should try to read within. When they have read a book, they take a quiz and generate points towards a target that has been set for them. Students have their ZPD level and points target on a sticker in their journal. We review the ZPD ranges 3 or 4 times per year.
How does my child access Accelerated Reader from home?
They should use the following link which can also be found in their google classroom and on the academy website:https://ukhosted10.renlearn.co.uk/2149435/
● Click on ‘I am a student’. Enter student’s username and password. How can I help my child find books within their ZPD range? You can help your child find books within their ZPD range at the following website: www.arbookfind.co.uk
● Click on ‘advanced search’
● Leave most of the information on the form that appears, blank but do fill in: His/her ZPD range (this is on a sticker in your child’s planner)His/her chronological age in ‘Interest Level’
Interests they have (optional)
Searching will then bring up lots of books within their reading range that can be searched for on myOn, borrowed from libraries of purchased from stockists. For any login issues please email samantha.richardson@scwa.org.uk .
