What if I get lost?
Getting around the academy is really easy. All the classrooms start with the first two letters of the building. For example, Delamere rooms start with DE... What do you think Ashdown and Sherwood rooms start with? Each floor has a number, like this: 0 for the ground, 1 for the 1st floor. What do you think the number is for the 2nd floor? Where would you find the following classrooms? DE002, SH101, AS203. There are lots of friendly staff and students on site who have been in the same position as you before, so just ask and they will happily show you the way! There is a map of the Academy Site below to help you.
What if I'm not in the same class as my friends?
It is possible you won't be in the same tutor group or even small school as some of your primary school friends, but you must not worry! You will be able to see your old friends at break, lunch and lessons like DT and PE as well as in whole school events. All the new students that join SCWA are encouraged to make brand new friendships that will help them through this new stage in their education. Everyone else in your class will feel a little shy and even worried about this, but before you know it, you will all feel, as though you have been friends forever!
The teachers at SCWA Academy will be more than happy to help you if you need some extra explanation about something you are studying. It is really important that you speak to your subject teacher or tutor if you are worried about any aspect of your learning. If it is homework that is causing stress then ask your parents / carers to contact the Academy by writing in your Student Journal or to contact us via
e-mail. We will also run after school homework clubs you can pop into for help. Just ask a teacher!
At SCWA, your teachers have the highest expectations of you and the work you produce as well as how you treat others. In class, teachers will give you up to 3 warnings if you are being disruptive. On warning 3, you will have a 20 minute (detention) at the end of the following school day. If you continue to make poor choices after a 3rd warning, you will be 'On-Called', which means a Senior Teacher will come to remove you from that class and you will have to work in another classroom. You will have a 40 minute detention the following day with a Senior Leader for being removed. Be polite, complete your work and this part of school life won't affect you.
At SCWA, students who eat in the restaurant are consuming food by Cucina, a company who aim to feed you healthy and tasty food. There is everything from hot meals, to 'Grab & Go' items, salads, and healthy desserts. The restaurant caters for all dietary requirements and the friendly staff are happy to tell you what's in the food you want to eat, in order to help you make the right choices. Students receive free porridge in the morning if they get in early before school or can purchase other breakfast items. The restaurant is open at break, lunch and also after school. Some students bring a packed lunch with them. Just remember that Energy drinks and chewing gum are banned onsite and if seen they will be confiscated and disposed of.
When you come to SCWA you will see older students getting along with each other in harmony. Everyone is expected to be polite and kind to all members of our community. We do not tolerate any behaviour that is not in line with our Academy values of Respect, Inclusion, Family, Collaboration and Perseverance. We expect our students to display our values and morals in and outside school for the time you are part of our community. This is why we will not tolerate unkind comments to each other. When someone is being unkind, we encourage you to tell a teacher at school. This can be your tutor or the specially designated 'Student Support Officers' in your small school. They will be able to discuss the issue with you and help you sort things out.
What are the main differences between Primary and Secondary school?
The biggest difference between primary and secondary school is the fact that you will be taught by different teachers for every subject you study. These teachers specialize in their field and are experts in that subject. You will have a 'form tutor' who you will see every day and will ensure you are ready to take on the day of learning. Your form tutor will be the person responsible for you at school, whilst the teachers are responsible for your performance in their subject. Another difference is that you will move to different classrooms as you change from lesson to lesson. The good news is that you will move around with your class, so you can all go as a group.
What about travelling to and from school?
In Secondary school, most students start going to and from school on their own, however lots of our students get to school in a variety of ways! In year 7, some students are taken and collected from school by a grown up (a guardian or parent). Other students are happy to walk or get the bus on their own. Some students even cycle to school and we have a safe bike shed where bikes can get locked away for the day. A lot of students travel in groups and meet each other and travel together. As an Academy, we expect our students to display the highest standards of behaviour when travelling to and from school, wearing our uniform and representing our academy to the local community.
What about rewards?
You will find that SCWA teachers are really friendly and absolutely love students who work hard, try their best, never give up and show they can improve in their school subjects. We believe that the best reward for a student comes from the feeling you get when you do something well. When doing well you will receive certificates (Bronze, Silver, Gold), as well as positive phone calls and letters. At school, we give prizes in assembly as well as showcase your beautiful work on display boards around school as well as the 'Book of Pride' which sits at the reception of every small school. We actively encourage our students to share what they do outside school too and we celebrate this. Anything from charity work to Karate lessons and special skills! Let us know!
What about homework?
We use Google Classroom to set homework. Your teacher will invite you to a virtual classroom where you will be able to communicate with your teachers about your learning and see the assignments you need to do, access resources, collaborate with your peers and submit assignments. It keeps everything in one place so you know where to find everything. Don't worry if you've never used google classroom before, we will give you and your parents/carers all the training and guidance you need when you start.
Can I play at Break and
Lunchtime?
Break time is a shorter break from lessons than lunch. Students normally use the break time to go to the toilet and meet their friends for a quick chat. At lunch, you have a bit more time to actually play games or do something that interests you. Most students like to meet their friends outside the school buildings so that they get fresh air. Some students go to lunch time clubs. Other students prefer to play football on the pitch or basket ball on the basketball court.
What about my belongings?
At Stationers' Crown Woods Academy we do not have lockers. This means that you are fully and solely responsible for looking after your own stuff at all times. Although this can be a little scary, it's an important part of growing up. In the winter, you will have to carry your coat with you. You will also have to carry your PE bag with you on the days you have PE. If you bring trainers to use in the pitch at lunch, you will also carry this around with you. Sometimes students forget these in classrooms, so make sure all your belongings have your name on it so that anyone can hand it in at the reception for you to collect. Try not to bring cash onsite, we are not responsible for this if it gets lost and neither are we responsible for your phone if lost or stolen.
