“One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.”
The PE department spent a lot of time planning our first ever Sports Day which took place at home, here at Wilmington Academy and what an event it was! We decided that team sports and activities were the best way to promote and embed the MYP IB traits into our students in sports. This allowed us to make the day even more engaging for our students as well as encouraging more participation in the events.
The event consisted of four main activities repeated throughout the year groups and the winning teams being invited to a final on the Wednesday.

Despite the challenges we have faced regarding Covid we have put a lot of effort into ensuring that students experienced a range of extracurricular activities at school. We have had an amazing uptake of these opportunities which has been wonderful to witness!
This summer we have had year 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams participate in cricket games against other secondary schools. Each team demonstrated a wide range of MYP IB traits especially being open-minded as they entered each event, this has made us very proud indeed.
We were fortunate enough to be able to enter a year 7 and a year 8 girls’ team for the OAA events. The students had to navigate using a map to find 10 checkpoints in order to receive a letter to solve an anagram at the end of the event. The students used their communication and team work skills to solve the anagram which was “This Girl Can”. They demonstrated great determination and showcased their risk- taker abilities by powering through in the rain. The year 8 girls came 5th and the year 7 girls came 7th overall.
The year 8 students did not fail to impress at the Discovery and Learning Festival. All students involved showed amazing participation, teamwork skills and open -mindedness. They all participated in a football penalty shoot out. An obstacle course, which they had to do blind-folded and in pairs, really highlighted their excellent communication and caring skills. Students displayed their risk taking skills in volleyball and in ‘Sitting Volleyball’ which is something they had never tried before. Next, they used their transferable skills in hockey and bocca. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and took part in all the activities. All students received a medal for showing the Kent School Games quality of ‘self-belief’.
This was yet another outstanding day of sport with brilliant results at the Kent School Games for Athletics!
Transitioning from the virtual athletics we held in April for year 7, Wilmington Academy got through as the only school in Dartford to represent the Dartford Borough in the Kent School Games. We are extremely proud of our students for achieving this feat!
We had an amazing day as our year 7 girls’ team were placed 10th achieving 328 points, and our year 7 boys team emerged 11th achieving 598 points which is a huge achievement out of all the schools in Kent!
