Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you are well. I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on all the amazing things that have happened in Sancho college so far this year and share some stand-out successes from our students.
As a collegiate body, we continue to shine, regularly getting the most number of merits in a given week, and recently going through a spell of three weeks in a row as the college with the most merits! Unfortunately, in the overall standings we are just being pipped to the post by Fawcett currently, but with just over 100 points in it out of over 37,000, I’m sure we will regain our top spot by the end of the year! Particular shoutouts have to go to Henry 8B, Rafferty 8B, and Annabelle 9B, who are all in the Top 10 for the whole Academy. Well done!
As usual, we will be celebrating all our students’ successes in the final assembly of this term, as well as holding a celebration breakfast for those who most consistently display our values day in, day out. Please look out for our new badges, awarded to students who pass particular thresholds of merits: any student with over 150 merits in the year to year to date will receive a bronze badge, with 250 merits earning a silver badge, and 350 for a gold. It is heartening to see that several Sancho students are already well over the threshold for silver, with still so much of the year left to go! Do congratulate your child if you see them in possession of one of these.
As for attendance, Sancho is joint top for the year to date, outperforming the Academy average. Particular shoutouts must go to 9E, 8B, 7E for all having attendance over 95% and all those many individuals who continue to preserve their 100% streak!
There is no greater correlation in the educational literature than that between attendance and academic success, so please do continue to encourage your children to attend the Academy every day!
There have been lots of fantastic academy-wide events over the last few weeks alone, including a ski trip to Italy, an English trip to the Globe Theatre, an Art trip to the Hayward Gallery, and a series of guest speakers, addressing such topics as International Women’s Day and Online Safety. It was fantastic to see so many Sancho students involved in these, and also to receive such positive feedback about how those on trips have engaged in the local community.
The main event over the last couple of weeks has of course been our school musical, Annie. It was a real pleasure to see our students in another context, and a variety of different roles! There has been much excitement surrounding the musical, so I’m happy to say that it lived up to the hype! The long list of Sancho students involved is:
Phoebe 7E, Suhaila 7B, Isaac 7B, Mia 7B, Linara 8E, Daisy 7E, Natalia 8E, Inka 8E, Owen 8E , Megan 8B, Sajeevan 8B, and Nieve 7E.
I’m of course delighted that the star of the show, Annie herself, is a member of Sancho, with Phoebe showing herself to be a true triple threat! The drama team have also asked for a special shoutout for Natalia, who took over as Head of Sound and helped run all the audio for the production, despite only being in Year 8. This has included ensuring all the rehearsals and shows have been mic'd up, getting the music cues ready, organising music for the intervals and exits, and working tirelessly with the sound team to get them ready for the show. Several Sancho students also secured leading roles in the production backstage crew, including Inka as head of costumes and Owen as stage manager. They have had to manage teams which include other students from Y7-12, not letting their age stop them from being brilliant leaders.
Finally, I wanted to share a few more individual successes for Sancho students from the sporting domain. Harry W 10B plays centre midfield for Welling United Football Club, alongside a friend for Fawcett (Maybin C), and the team have recently won the London FA Youth Cup. The final was held at Charlton Football Club, with the final score being 2-1 in extra time. Another Sancho student, Tate E 11B, has also recently signed for Charlton Athletic.
If your child has been involved in something outside of school that you would like to share, please do get in touch with us on our Sancho email address - we love making the most of every opportunity to celebrate our students’ many and varied talents.
I wish you all a restful break, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back again after Easter!
