Students will be trained on the proper social distancing expectations. Some hallways will be designated as “one-way” to allow foot traffic to move in one direction. In hallways that have two-way traffic, students will be encouraged to flow from a specific side of the hallway to limit mixing of groups. Staff will be in the hallways to encourage social distancing among students. There are no current plans to stagger bell schedules.
Yes, Laredo ISD will follow health guidelines and require face coverings (mask or face shield) over the nose and mouth of all students.
Face coverings may be removed to consume food or drink, or to engage in physical activity outdoors while maintaining a safe distance. The same requirements apply to all staff members.
We do understand that students may not want to wear a face covering for the entire school day, however face coverings have shown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We ask that you encourage the use of face coverings with your child.
We will be training staff and students on safety procedures. We will implement increased signage around campuses promoting disease mitigation strategies, increased cleaning and sanitation practices, as well as frequent reminders of hand hygiene and social distancing. Laredo ISD will comply with all health and safety recommendations established by the Governor, the health department, and the Texas Education Agency. Safety shields, Plexiglass barriers will be in place and hand sanitizers will be available. Student and staff temperature checks will be conducted daily. Safety and health measures may be adjusted based on current guidelines and conditions.
All staff members will receive COVID-19 prevention training prior to the opening of school. All students will receive instruction on health protocols related to minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Frequent reminders for staff and students will be implemented. We ask that you remind your child of the proper safety steps to follow.
Class size guidelines from TEA will be followed. At this time, the class size requirements are the same as a regular school year. The maximum number of students per class varies by grade level and also varies by class at the secondary level. Classrooms will be equipped with Plexiglass barriers as much as possible. Hand sanitizing stations will be made available throughout our schools. Classroom social distancing will be implemented. It is recommended that you purchase face coverings and hand sanitizers for your child.
Grab and go meals will be provided to students on campus. Some students will be eating in the cafeteria, spaced according to the recommended guidelines, and other students may eat in the classroom if necessary. Safety and health measures will be adjusted based on current guidelines and conditions.
Yes, transportation will continue to be provided for all who qualify. Bus transportation is provided for all special education students and eligible general education students who live two or more miles from their school or in areas specially designated by the transportation department. Students attending specialty schools will be provided with transportation.
Students will be assigned seats following social distancing guidelines. Students will be highly encouraged to wear face coverings and use hand sanitizer provided when boarding and exiting the bus. School buses will be cleaned and disinfected daily. Students should not share any items, are required to remain seated at all times, and keep their hands to themselves. Safety and health measures may be adjusted based on current guidelines and conditions.
Training will be given to staff and students. Signage and notices reminding students and staff about social distancing, hand washing, and infection prevention will be posted throughout the school.
To limit social distancing, elementary classrooms will be assigned specific bathrooms; have designated breakfast, lunch, and gym access times to reduce the number of students in any given area as much as possible.
To limit social distancing, secondary students will be encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines. Middle school students will remain in one classroom for most of the day. Middle school teachers will be moving into classrooms. High school students will need to follow social distancing signs and will be moving into classrooms.
The district will continue to follow all guidelines provided by UIL, TEA, and the state. Safety guidelines are being finalized for conducting all on-campus workouts, rehearsals, and practices. These safety guidelines will be published as soon as they become available.
For in person instruction, students and staff will be required to use hand sanitizer, practice social distancing, wear a face covering and wash their hands before and after PE. Students will be reminded not share school supplies. All supplies must be labeled with the child’s name. Limited group activities will be implemented to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
Yes, students who select remote learning or in person learning may participate in clubs and/or organizations. Meetings may be held virtually, as applicable. Students must have their own transportation to and from campus when meetings and activities occur.
Students or staff who test positive for COVID-19 will be sent home to recover. When notification of a possible exposure occurs, in coordination with local health authorities, the campus/district will conduct contact tracing. Based on the results, a determination will be made as to whether an entire classroom or multiple classrooms are required to quarantine. In the event students are required to temporarily quarantine, the education of these students will continue through remote learning for the duration of the quarantine period. TEA has allowed only five days of school closure during a positive COVID-19 incident.
During the period of the school closure, students will remain at home and will engage in learning activities that are primarily delivered through an online learning management system. Students will participate in remote learning until the quarantine has been lifted.
The district has identified Google Classroom as the tool to support a consistent learning management system for students across the district. Other online resources such as Seesaw, Class Dojo and Nearpod will be utilized to engage students.
Google Classroom helps organize assignments, boosts collaboration, and fosters communication. For those students who choose in person learning, this tool will be used as a digital extension of the classroom. Resources will also be available for parents to learn how to support students in navigating learning through these digital tools.
We are currently assessing student needs and the availability of devices. If your child requires a device, please contact your child’s school. Every effort will be made to issue a device. Students who cannot participate in remote learning at home because of lack of internet or devices will have access to on campus internet and resources.
To support all students, the district curriculum will highlight academic standards that teachers will consider as they plan to address the potential learning impacts resulting from the school closure. Teachers will use formative assessments and supplemental resources to personalize student learning to address areas of need.
Overall progress on learning outcomes will be communicated in a “traditional” format using numeric grades and letter grades for early childhood students. Assignments and grades will be entered into Skyward. The expectations for coursework and guidelines for grading in person learning and remote learning will be the same. GPA and class ranking for high school students will be in effect this school year. Parents and students will be given progress reports and report cards.
Yes, The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has indicated that STAAR testing will still occur during the 2020-2021 school year, in compliance with state and federal legislation.
Yes, due to the scheduling complexities inherent in these two options, parents will be asked to make a commitment for a grading period. Special circumstances that affect a family will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the campus principal. Please note that if a student switches between in person learning and remote learning, the student may not have the same teacher(s) or course schedule, as teachers may or may not be teaching both an in person and a remote learning class.
For current students, parents will complete the commitment form no later than TBD at 8:00 a.m. Upon enrollment, new students will be provided the opportunity to select their instructional model.
