What is 'mental health'?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It impacts on how we act and behave in lots of different settings and with lots of different people. Our mental health and how healthy this is determines how we handle situations that are stressful, how we relate to other people and how we make choices in life.
So, being mentally healthy isn't just about not having a mental health problem. If we are mentally healthy, we can also:
go through daily life working to the best of our ability in whatever we are doing
cope with life and the daily stresses that may arise
play a full part in the relationships you have with others and in the life you lead
Mental health is also sometimes called 'mental wellbeing' or 'emotional wellbeing'. Whatever you might call it, it is just as important to look after your mental health as it is to look after your physical health.
We don't always have good mental health all of the time - this is normal. It is normal to go through periods of time in your life where things feel a little more difficult to cope with. But the most important thing that we can do is ensure that we are equipped with tools that can help us to process and deal with the tougher times.
Below are some gudies from the Mental Health Foundation with some useful tips and strategies for looking after your mental health.
