An IOS can be used to gather data on skill, this involves:
a performer taking place in a 3 set match against an opponent of similar ability.
coach/ observer recording information on your performance on a IOS table. The IOS is laid out with different skills listed across the top row. There are then three rows underneath (Very Effective, Fairly Effective, Ineffective).
The observer will record the success of each type of shot by recording a tick in the appropriate box every time you play it.
At the end of the game your success rate for each shot can be calculated as a percentage.
For increased accuracy you could video your performance and use this to fill out your IOS.
Point>Explanation>Example
Method is Valid: as it involved me playing against opponents of a similar ability. This meant it replicated the conditions I normally played in and showed me performing at my typical levels to give me a true understanding of my capabilities.
Method is Accurate: because the IOS was filled out by a knowledgeable observer who had an understanding of what a very effective, effective and in-effective shot looks like in Badminton. This meant that I could use the information to accurately identify what shots I need to work on.
Method is Reliable: as my performance could be recorded and the IOS could be filled out while the observer watched the footage. This ensured that the observer did not miss any shots as rallies could be watches in slow motion and the video paused if required.
Easy of use: I also used the IOS because it was practical as it was very easy to interpret my data. This meant it was easy for me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as I simply looked at the percentages of very effective and ineffective skills. This then lead to me carrying out a development plan and setting specific targets to work towards.
Permanent Record: I used the IOS because it was measurable as it was a permanent record. This meant I was able to compare my re-tests results to this baseline data to measure any improvements in my performance. This then lead to me receiving a motivational boost when I saw improving and I gave my all in subsequent sessions.
Break down method into different parts> Analyse each part
Data gathered by coach/ observer- This encourages accurate information to be gathered as it is being recorded during the performance by someone who has a knowledge of what a very effective, effective and in-effective shot looks like in Badminton.
Information is gathered during a game situation- This gives an accurate representation of how player performs under pressure and means the performer can find out what shot they need to work on most.
Data recorded for a extended period (over the course of 3 sets)- This means the statistics provided are more likely to be a true reflection of the players capabilities. If data was just recorded over the course of a short period (eg 1 set) and the performer made an uncharacteristic number of mistakes this could distort the data.
Performance Context- The performer should ensure they play an opponent of similar ability to themselves. If they play someone who they are much better than this could cause unreliable data and mean that the results of the IOS are invalid.
Point >Evaluative Judgement>Example
Strength is OHC as I make very few errors (3) using this shot. This is similar to a model performer who would also have a similar success rate for this shot and would use it to force opponents to the back creating space at the front of the court. .
Serve is strength as high percentage of fairly effective and very effective serves (87% in total). A model performer would only have a slightly higher success rate as they would have more very effective low serves as the have greater control and can get the shuttle lower to net and give opponent less time to return the shot.
Drop shot could be improved as only 1 shot was very effective. This is a much lower number than a model performer would expect to have as they would use this shot in a game to win points when an opponent was positioned to the back of the court.
Area for development is smash as they play zero very effective smashes. A model performer will have a much greater level of power in their shots which makes them a lot more difficult to return meaning the win a lot of points when they use this shot.
