In order to improve a skill the normal rules of a game can be changed so that the skill being learned occurs more often or has greater importance. What is important when using conditioned games is that the condition allows you to continue to improve the area of the game you are focusing on.
Some example of ways you might add a condition are given below:
Alter how points are scored. This could be through performing certain skills or acting in a certain way
Increase points/goals for scoring using a certain skill/technique or tactics
Only allowed to score using certain skill/technique or tactics
Must complete a particular sequence of skills/techniques before able to score
Change the size of the playing area
Change the parts of the playing area that the players can use
Alter number of players
Introduce additional tasks to be able to score.
Key information to include in your answer:
What were the rules of the game?
How was the performance area set up?
Did you use any equipment?
Who were you playing against?
What Skill were you developing?
Example Answer from Badminton:
Full court game against a player of the same ability.
Added the condition that every serve must be a low serve (played close to the net).
The serve can then be returned using a high lift shot. After the serve and return, normal rules apply within the game.
This encoruages the server to improve the quality of their low serve, and means that they have to get ready and into position quickly to set up an attack.
The game is played upto 15 points.
Example Answer from Basketball
In basketball we used a conditioned game to improve our passing and moving skills. We adapted the rules as follows...
Players were not allow to transport the ball by dribbling.
The only way to transport the ball was by passing and moving into a space.
We also set a rule that a team has to perform 4 consecutive passes before they could shoot.
The games was 5 v 5 on a full court, however if the players were finding this difficult we added in a floating player who helped whatever team was in possession of the ball.
I used conditioned games because……………..(select 1 from below)
I find this method of practice motivating as I get to participate in a competitive game whilst developing my skills at the same time.
Conditions can be placed on the game, and adapted throughout, to encourage the performer to change how they play/or act during a game situation.
A conditioned game can provide a good stepping stone to further improve a skill/technique that has been worked on in a previous session to help in-corporate this skill into a competitive performance.
o For example a player may be focusing on developing their drop shot and be given double points for scoring using this shot. This game will not only help the player to develop this sill but also their decision making, confidence, use of tactics, concentration and mental toughness.
The method can be adapted to suit the needs of an individual. For example a I need to work on my smash I could lay out cones on the court and get points every time I hit the shuttle into this target area. This allowed me to develop my accuracy under pressure as I had something to aim for and did not score points unless I performed to a high standard.
