SCAT test involves:
The athlete responds to the 15 questions on the above questionnaire.
Read each statement, decide if you "Rarely", "Sometimes" or "Often" feel this way when competing in your sport, and tick the appropriate box to indicate your response.
The questionaire can be undertaken electronically or on a piece of paper.
After completeing all questions an athlete calculates their score using the scoring criteria.
A numerical score is provided and this provides an indication of the level of anxiety a performer possesses.
Comparison to National Averages/ Model Performer
Example describe:
A method I used to collect information on the Emotional factor was the Sports Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT). The SCAT test is a double sided A4 sheet of paper with a table on one side comprising of 15 statements. Beside the statements are 3 columns rarely sometimes or often. The performer reads each statement and selects which option applies to them. Once you have completed the table you turn the page over and compare your answers to the table on the back some responses score 1/2 or 3. You total this up and this gives you a score, my score was 15. I compared my score to the key at the bottom, a score less than 17 indicates a low level of anxiety. 17 to 24 indicates an average level of anxiety and more than 24 indicates a high level of anxiety.
Point>Explanation>Example
Method is Valid: because the questions ask you specifically about how you were feeling at different stages of your performance. This allows you to establish if you have a high/medium/low level of anxiety when in certain situations.
Method is Accurate: because all of my answers were honest and based on my own thoughts and feelings. I also undertook the Questionnaire Immediately after my performance so I could remember exactly how I felt throughout.
Method is Reliable: as I completed the same 15 questions each time I did the questionnaire and I carried this out immediately after my performance, meaning i could remember exactly how i felt. The questions were simple to understand when I answered them and once I had answered them all I also knew how to calculate my score for the questionnaire by using the easy to follow scoring criteria.
Results Quantifiable: The test gave me a numerical score that I could use to compare to the table of norms or a model performer to identify if my Anxiety was a strength/weakness within my performance. I could then use this as a benchmark and compare back to this score in the future to see if i had improved.
Question - Explain why this method (SCAT test) is suitable when collecting information on Emotional Factors (4)
A reason why the SCAT test is suitable to collect information on Emotional factors is it allows me to find out my strength and weaknesses in that factor.
For example I scored 23 for my anxiety level. This means I can create a PDP to improve on my anxiety over the next ten weeks.
A second reason why the SCAT test is suitable to collect information on Emotional factors is it allows me keep this method as a permanent record.
For example if I complete my SCAT test in week 1 of my programme and I keep it I can use this a baseline to compare back to. This means I can keep the SCAT test and compare back to it during my PDP to see if it working and if I am improving on my weakness
A third reason why the SCAT test is suitable to collect information on Emotional factors is it is checked by a coach.
For example after I complete the SCAT test I can hand it top my coach to fill out the other side. This means he can check my answers to make sure they are honest and he can also complete his own SCAT test based on my performance to give me accurate and valid information.
A final reason why the SCAT test is suitable to collect information on Emotional factors is it allows me to set goals and targets. For example, I can easily work out my score and set short term/ long term targets to improve my performance in the SCAT test and use this method again in future to see if I am meeting my goals.
Break down method into different parts> Analyse each part
The SCAT test is practical and quick and easy to carry out: This means that I can carry this out at home and am more likely to answer the questions honestly and accurately without feeling rushed or embarrassed.
You are provided with numerical score for the test: this allows you to compare your scores to a model performer and objectively identify whether managing your anxiety is something that you need to work on or not.
The questionnaire is quick, easy and simple to undertake: This means it can be undertaken by at performer at the end of their performance, and the performer may be more likely to remember how they felt at time. If the performer waits a while before filling it in they could forget how they felt at different stages of their performance and this could compromise the reliability of their results.
The performer fills out the questionnaire honestly by themselves and can keep this information private if they wish: This may result in more reliable information as the performer knows exactly how they felt during their performance and they can be honest without fear or embarrassment of being judged.
The questionnaire asks the performer how they felt at different stages of their performance: This allows a performer to pinpoint at what stage they need to manage their anxiety and allow them to identify the best development approach to achieve this.
Point >Evaluative Judgement>Example
Managing my Anxiety is something I need to improve on as my Anxiety levels are much higher than a model performer. In the SCAT test I scored 24 where as they scored 17 meaning their leve of anxiety is much lower throughout a performance.
Prior to an important performance I always feel nervous and my heart rate is high. This makes me more likely to make a mistake in the early stages of my performance as I may rush and my technique will be jirky. A model performer is calmer and controls their nerves more effectively.
There was less difference between me and a Model Performer in terms of worrying about mistakes: We both said that we 'sometimes' worry about mistakes, this is natural when under pressure but it does not cause our performance to deteriorate.
I am also a good sportsman when I compete and this is the same as a model performer: Even if I am anxious about winning a competition, I always congratulate a fellow competitor if they have executed their routine well.
Question – Evaluate how effective this method was for collecting data on Emotional Factors (3)
The SCAT test is an effective method of collecting data on Emotional factors because it is checked by a coach. This means I can complete the questionnaire honestly myself and a coach can check my responses to ensure they are an accurate representation of my strengths and weaknesses.
The SCAT test is an effective method of collecting data on Emotional factors because it can be kept and compared back to.
This means I can complete the SCAT test in week 1 as a baseline test and then recomplete in the middle and end of my PDP to check if the PDP is working and I am improving my Emotional skills.
The SCAT test is ineffective if I do not complete it honestly. This means if I rate myself too highly I will get information which is invalid. This could mean I think I am improving during my PDP as I have scored higher than I should have as I have. This could lead to me gaining false information and working on the wrong weakness during my PDP.
