In your exam you will be required to demonstrate a knowledge of Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Factors in the following areas:
1. How do MESP factors have a positive/negative impact on individual/team performance.
2. How do MESP factors have a possible impact on each other during either a performance, or during the performance development process.
3. How does the subsequent impact of MESP factors impact a performers ability to complete a development programme.
I need to concentrate when playing half-court man to man defence in basketball.
This means I am able to focus on marking my opponent whilst not getting distracted by the movements of others around me.
This resulted in me staying tight to my opponent and intercepting passes that are made to them regaining possession for my team and setting up a fast break.
Decision making is important during a rally in Badminton.
This means i can notice my opponent is staying at the back of the court and not getting back to the middle, i can then decide to play a drop shot to the front of the court.
This leads to my opponent not being able to return the shuttle and me winning the point.
Anger
Definition: Is a strong feeling of being annoyed and can lead to someone being uncooperative.
Anger can have a negative impact on my performance in football when the referee gives a foul against me. This means i get angry and swear at the referee. This leads to me giving away a free kick to the other team and I get a yellow card for disent meaning I have to be more cautious for the rest of the game.
Anxiety
Definition: Is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.
Anxiety can have a negative impact on my performance in swimming when performing a tumble turn. This means as I approach the wall to do a tumble turn I feel very nervous which means I overthink the turn and misplace my feet on the wall. This leads to me slowing down when coming out of the turn and I fall behind another swimmer.
Consistency
Definition: Is your ability to execute skills successfully over a period of time.
Example: Having poor consistency for my smash in badminton can have a negative impact on my performance. This means that when I play a smash, my opponent has a better chance of returning them. This leads to my opponent returning the shuttle to keep the rally and have a better chance of scoring that point.
Accuracy
Definition: Is how well you can place a shot or pass where you want to place it.
Example: Accuracy can have a positive impact on my performance in hockey. When aiming for the top left hand corner, I can hit it precisely into this corner of the goal. This means the shot is out of reach for the goalkeeper and I score for my team.
Technique
Definition: Is the way you perform a physical skill. (Example: A topspin forehand shot in Table Tennis)
Example:
CRE
Definition: Is how long you can perform for without tiring. It mainly refers to the ability of the heart (cardio) and lungs (respiratory) to continuously supply oxygenated blood to the working muscles.
Example: CRE can have a negative impact on my performance in rugby. This means as the game goes on I struggle to keep up with the play which means I don't get to the ruck in time to protect the ball. This leads to the other team to being able to counter-ruck and gain possession of the ball.
Agility
Definition: Is changing directly at speed whilst maintaining your balance.
Example: If I have good agility in basketball this will have a positive impact on my performance. This means I will be able to change direction quickly so that I can stay with my opponent. This leads to me putting them under pressure and allowing me to gain possession.
Speed
Definition: Is how quickly you can move part or all of your body.
Example: Speed can have a positive impact on my performance in football. As a full-back I can match the other team's winger when they are trying to dribble down the wing. This means I can put pressure on them when they are trying to cross the ball. This leads to me tackling him and regaining possession for my team.
Communication
Definition: Is sharing information with teammates to support your performance.
Example: Communication can have a positive impact in football when I am looking to make a run in behind the defence. This means I can tell the centre midfielder that I am about to run in behind the defence so they can pass the ball quickly for me to run onto. This leads to me getting through on goal and gives me a good opportunity to put my team in the lead.
Team Dynamics
Definition: Is the way teammates interact with each other, either positively or negatively.
Example: Team dynamics can have a negative impact on my performance in basketball. This means when we are out of position as a team, we do not work well together when trying to organise our defence. This leads to the opponents getting closer to the basket and scoring.
Knowledge of Role
Definition: Is how well you understand and perform your role within your team. (Example: Performing your responsibilities as Point Guard in Basketball.)
Example: Having a good understanding of my role in rugby can have a positive impact on my performance as I can perform my responsibilities well. As a full-back, I communicate consistently with the players in front of me, telling them where opposition players are moving to. This results in my teammates being in better defensive positions and reducing the chances of the opposition breaking our defensive line.

MESP factors can impact on each other in sport. For example lack of CRE can impact concentration in the last ten minutes of a game. In your exam you may be asked to look at how one specific factor impacts on others.
Some common examples are shown below:
Anxiety impacting on technique
Anxiety impacting on decision making
Confidence impacting on technique
Poor CRE impacting concentration
Anger impacting decision making
Communication impacting decision making
Motivation impacting CRE
Anger could negatively impact communication in Football when the referee gives a foul against me for a challenge and books me; I get angry. This could mean that for the next few minutes of the game I am angry and do not call for the ball when my team has possession. This could lead to me not being played in behind the defence as I don’t call for the ball over the top which leads to my team not creating a goal scoring opportunity because I didn’t call for the ball.
CRE may impact on concentration towards the end of a game of Football. This means if i get tired my concentration levels may drop meaning i lose my man i am marking at a corner. This could lead to him winning a free header and putting his team into the lead.
Lack of communication may influence decision making in Basketball. This means if my teammates do not communicate i will not be aware they are in space. This leads to me choosing the wrong option, the opposition getting the ball back and my team having to defend.
