Year 4

Theme:  How we organise ourselves

Central idea - Invasions may lead to change.

Year 4 have had an incredibly busy term not only with all their learning but also with World Book Day and learning and rehearsing for their spring musical.

Line of inquiry 1:  An inquiry into identifying invasions.

In our first line of inquiry, we have had fantastic fun learning all about what an invasion is, why invasions can happen as well as researching invasions that have happened. We made our own timelines starting from recent invasion, working our way backwards through time. The children showed some great engagement and fantastic research and thinking skills. Focussing on a specific period of time, we researched and identified who the Ancient Romans were, their invasion tactics and weaponry. Year 4 then designed and made their own Roman shields to use for our Mini-museum at the end of the module.

Line of Inquiry 2:  An inquiry into civilisations that invaded others.

In our second line of inquiry, we have explored how the Ancient Romans invaded other civilisations, including Britain. Year 4 researched Julius Caesar's attempted invasion of Britain, the expansion of the Roman Empire by AD 42 and the power of its army, the successful invasion of Claudius and conquest including Hadrian's Wall and the British resistance against the Romans.

Line of Inquiry 3:  An inquiry into the impact of invasions.

In our third line of inquiry, we looked at the impact of the Romanisation of Britain and its impact upon the daily life of Britain today. We discussed how invasions can cause both positive and negative impacts upon civilisations and communities, as well as exploring how both the invaders and the people who are being invaded could be feeling.

Our Action:

For our action, Year 4 chose to do a mini museum for other classes to look at the Roman shields they made, as well as some of the amazing Roman weaponry they would have used. They explained in detail on what each item was, how it was used and what they thought of it. We then did a demonstration of a Testudo formation using our shields!

Reading and Writing Through Inquiry

This term, Year 4 have explored a range of non-fiction texts. Our class text has been 'The Roman Quests; Escape from Rome' by Caroline Lawrence.

Year 4 have also been using their transdisciplinary learning to write a diary entry and an adventure narrative! The children have worked hard to develop a more consistent use of using compound and complex sentences, expanded noun phrases to add detail and clarity to their writing as well as using fronted adverbials. We have also explored the use of inverted commas to show direct speech, as well as apostrophes to show possession.

Recorder Festival

This term, some of our fabulous Year 4 children represented Langley Park at a recorder festival with our cluster schools. They were fantastic and it was a delight to see them showcasing all they have learnt and their hard work!
