Year 1

Inquiry

This term, Year 1 has inquired about how humans make sense of the world by being connected through the lines of inquiry:

1. An inquiry into what makes up our identity.

2. An inquiry into who and where is important to me.

3. An inquiry into using our senses to understand the world around us.

For line of inquiry 1, the children wrote a personal profile about themselves. They reflected upon their own identity and thought about what they liked and disliked, things that made them special, attributes that they are proud off and what makes me, me? The children paired up with a child from the other Year 1 class to share and reflect upon similarities and differences.

For line of inquiry 2, the children thought about people that are important to them. They then created a card expressing why that person was important. After this, the children wrote a recount of their trip around Langley Park. They sequenced the events and recalled all of the things they saw on their journey.

For line of inquiry 3, the children wrote a diary extract in the voice of Little Red Riding Hood. They used their sequencing skills to write about the events that took place in the story. It was great to see the children making links to their own senses and how the Big Bad Wolf used his senses to trick Little Red Riding Hood.

Finally, we invited Paul from the British Guide Dog Association in to our classes to share his experience of being visually impaired and how he relies upon his guide dog to keep him safe. The children were very excited to meet the guide dog and were very surprised to see that he was not a Labrador!

Experiences:

Our Local Community

Enterprise and Jubilee Class went for a walk around the local area to explore how they use their senses to understand the world around us. They realised that there were hidden sounds and sights all around them which they had not noticed before.

After this, we created maps to show where we had been. We also wrote a recount about our experience!

Action

To end our learning for this term, Paul from the British Guide Dog Association came to visit both classes. He explained to the children that he has no sight and was loosing his hearing so relies upon his dog to help him with everyday things. The children were surprised by how clever his dog was and how he used his dog to see. This was a great learning experience as the children now have a better understanding that everyone is different.

Maths Experiences

This term, Year 1, has been learning about numbers to 10. They have sorted objects in various ways, represented objects using different manipulative and started to recognise fact families, like:

1+9=10

9+1=10

10-1=9

10-9=1
