Year 5

Central Idea:  Many different factors influence the way decisions are made.

Parliament

At the start of this term, Year 5 pupils have learnt all about Parliament including the House of Lords and the House of Commons. From this, they conducted their own research to understand what the role of each house is as well as having agency in their learning to research three further areas of Parliament. To communicate their knowledge, pupils created their own 'pop up' non chronological report using their own drawing of Parliament as the pop up element.

Catching a pheasant - third method

Our core text this term has been Danny the Champion of the World written by Roald Dahl. A key element of the story is Danny learning all about poaching and catching pheasants using raisins from his father. The two original methods were the sticky hat and the horse hair stopper. The children roleplayed their own different methods before deciding which one they would like to use in their chapter. Once their chapter was complete, the children designed their own front covers for their chapter of the story.

Royal Family

This term, Year 5 has also learnt about the Royal Family. We spoke about key events where members of the Royal Family have been seen such as Trooping the Colour and the King's Coronation. From this, they researched about a chosen member of the Royal Family and they were very excited to write about the Royal Family. Once their research was complete, the children communicated their knowledge by creating a biography. Biographies were written about either King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince of Wales, Princess of Wales, Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal.

Magic Box poem

At the end of the term, Year 5 analysed a poem called the Magic Box written by Kit Wright. As a class, we used our imaginations and mind mapped ideas for characters, objects and scenery to recreate our own versions.

Transition to Year 6

A key part of this term has been their transition to Year 6. On Wednesday 12th, Year 5 visited for the first time and had the opportunity to partake in different team building activities. One activity they enjoyed was to build the tallest tower using spaghetti and the use of either blu tac, sellotape or marshmallows to connect everything together. On Friday 14th July, Year 5 spent a further couple of hours spending time with their new adults within their classes ready for September.
