During this line of inquiry, the children used their scientific and PSHE skills to identify what a balanced diet is and the different food groups within it. We looked at the Eatwell Plate and discovered that, although we need to be healthy, we can still have a small treat every now and then.
The children also investigated what nutrients are within the different food groups and how they help our bodies to become fit and healthy, including preventing us from becoming ill.
Using this information, Year 3 pupils made healthy snacks using their DT skills, making either a 'magic fruit wand' or 'owl on toast' - yummy!
Throughout this line of inquiry, Year 3 pupils have used their science and PSHE skills to learn about the human skeleton and how it helps support our bodies to move. The children have also investigated emotions; how to identify them in ourselves as well as what they might look like in others. We use the 'Zones of Regulation' in the classroom to check in on our emotions throughout the academy day.
The children also took this knowledge and applied it to their artwork, creating a portrait of themselves with an emotion. They thought about the colour that represents that emotion when colouring their final design.
During this line of inquiry, the children have compared lifestyle choices in Britain in past decades with those of today. Pupils started with looking at how Victorians viewed fitness and how our modern lifestyles are not too different. In more recent times, we incorporate more technology to follow our exercise routines and count our steps.
We then moved onto how food has changed since the 1950s, when food was still being rationed at the start of the decade. We discovered the impact of fast food chains, such as when McDonald's came to Britain in 1974, and then at the 2020s at which point we are interested in healthier and more sustainable options.
