Central Idea: Understanding myself and others, helps me grow.
In this line of inquiry, the children were learning about the different feelings and emotions they can have. We used the text 'The Colour Monster' and 'The Colour Monster Doctor' to learn the different colours that represent the different emotions and begin to understand how we can do things to change our emotions. For example; if we are feeling sad, we can either talk to someone or do something fun to make us feel happy again.
The children have also enjoyed exploring the different areas of reception and learning new routines and expectations. They have also been developing their independent skills by having a go at doing things for themselves even though it is tricky at times.
During this line of inquiry, the reception children were learning about the five senses and how we can use them. For example; "I like the smell of flowers. I smell them with my nose".
We have explored how else we can use our senses. For example; when we are outside, we can hear the birds and planes flying over us. We learnt that our senses cannot only tell us what we like and dislike but also how we can spot danger. For example: smelling smoke tells us that there is a fire.
As the children have become more comfortable with their environment, we have begun to introduce our PYP learner profile attributes. These are the key attributes we believe every child needs to become a lifelong learner. Within the EYFS, these are linked to Julia Donaldson characters so that pupils are able to easily identify them.
We have introduced being a 'Communicator' (like the ladybird in 'What the Ladybird Heard') and being 'balanced' (like the witch in 'Room on the Broom'). The children enjoyed identifying how they can include these attributes in their play at their own level of development. For example; they have used the codes learnt in their writing to communicate their ideas, like the ladybird in the story.
We are extremely proud of how well the children have settled into school life this term and are looking forward to continuing to support their development next term.
We are starting the term with Remembrance Day and looking at what poppies mean and why it is celebrated. If you have any family members that have any medals or pictures relating to this, we would love to borrow them to share with the children. We promise to take good care of them and will hand them back once we have finished with them.
We hope you all have a great half term break and we look forward to welcoming back the children on Monday 4th November.
