Overview of Curriculum
MYP History is a discpline within the MYP individuals and Societies subject group. The study of History encourages learners to investigate the past and learn about significant developments and people. It helps students to think critically, identify change and continuity, appreciate cause and consequence, and to develop historical empathy. The IB’s approach to this subject area includes a focus on inquiry and investigation. Students describe and analyse information and learn how to interpret increasingly complex information, including original source material. The links of history and today are important to consider and relevant to the learners' lives. At Landmark, we endeavour to cover key international topics during Years 7, 8 and 9 in preparation for the further studenty of History at IGCSE level. Wherever possible, links are made to the student's own heritage or culture.
We measure succes if the student leaves with an appreciation of the complexity of the past, as well as having skills to evaluate sources. This is a key skill that in our modern world is more and more vital to the success and wellbeing of our learners. We hope our learners will acquire a good knowledge base of history with the development of key historical skills in preparation for future study or for the enjoyment of History as a hobby through life. Our students have gone on to take History at IGCSE, A Level or The International Baccalaureate at either Standard or Higher Level. Students have also gone on to study History or subjects related to history at university.

In Years 10 and 11 Landmark students can choose to take History as a GCSE course. We follow the CAIE 0977 syllabus Option B. A summarised overview of the course is shown below. Many of our students go on to study History A Level or a degree either in History or a related subject. The CIE 0977 course, with its focus on the 20th Century, is strong in enabling a well focused understanting of modern world events, some of which are still playing out today. Another strength of the course is its strong focus on working with sources to evalute the reliability of evidence.

The core content focuses on the following key questions:
Was the Treaty of Versailles fair?
To what extent was the League of Nations a success?
How far was Hitler’s foreign policy to blame for the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939?
Who was to blame for the Cold War?
How effectively did the United States contain the spread of communism?
How secure was the USSR’s control over Eastern Europe, 1948–c.1989?
In addition, all candidates must also study a depth study. At Landmark we study Option B Germany, 1918–45.
