Level 2 Personal Effectiveness Qualification (PEQ) - Key Stage 4 Option

The ASDAN Personal Effectiveness Qualification (PEQ) is a practical qualification designed to help students in key stage 4 develop the skills they will need for life beyond school. It gives students the opportunity to work on real-life challenges, develop their confidence and independence, and demonstrate what they can do.

There are no exams or examined components to the PEQ. Instead, the qualification is assessed through a portfolio of work and evidence that students build up over two years. Students complete practical challenges, record what they have done and reflect on the skills they have developed. This allows them to demonstrate their progress in a range of different ways, rather than relying on a traditional written exam.

Students will complete six units over the two years, with each unit assessed separately to make up the overall PEQ qualification. The units cover a broad range of skills that are important both in school and in everyday life.

Communication
Students develop their ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with different people and in different situations. Challenges may include speaking and listening, giving and receiving information, adapting communication for different audiences and using communication effectively to achieve a particular outcome.

Teamwork
Students develop their ability to work positively with other people. They take part in group challenges, contribute ideas, take on different roles and work towards shared goals. They also have opportunities to think about their own contribution and what makes a team work well.

Problem Solving
Students learn how to approach problems and find possible solutions. Through practical challenges, they have opportunities to identify problems, consider different options, make decisions, try out solutions and reflect on what worked and what they could do differently.

Managing Money
This unit focuses on the practical financial skills students will need in everyday life. Students may work on challenges involving budgeting, comparing prices, making spending decisions, understanding different ways of paying and thinking about how to manage money responsibly.

Preparing for the World of Work
Students begin to think about their future and the skills they will need in the workplace. Challenges may include exploring careers, identifying their own strengths and skills, creating a CV, preparing for interviews and developing important workplace skills such as organisation, reliability and time management.

Independent Living
This unit focuses on developing the practical skills and confidence students need as they become more independent. Students may work on areas such as managing responsibilities, planning and organising tasks, making decisions, looking after themselves and their environment, and preparing for everyday life beyond school.

Across the two years, students are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their own work. They learn to set goals, organise themselves, work with others, overcome challenges and reflect on their achievements. Their portfolio provides a record of their progress across all six units and the skills they have developed.
