Spanish I

Course Description:

First year Spanish is an introductory course with emphasis on pronunciation, reading and writing skills. 

Spanish I is an introduction to the Spanish world, its language, and its people.  The main emphasis is on oral skills while developing reading and writing skills.  The student will recognize the interrelationships of languages and will develop a cultural appreciation of the Hispanic world.  Students should be moderately strong in language arts before considering taking Spanish I.  Some colleges require two years of the same foreign language as a part of their entrance requirements.

ADV Spanish II

Course Description:

ADV Spanish II is designed to provide self-motivated, ambitious students an opportunity to continue to develop the skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing at a faster pace than regular Spanish II.  This course will better prepare students who plan to further their studies of Spanish in ADV Spanish III.

Notes:  This is a course recommended for the student who has demonstrated a high level of interest, dedication, and aptitude for a subject area.

ADV Spanish III

Course Description:

Third year ADV Spanish is an upper-level course.  Curriculum includes a review of grammar and study of Spanish literature, history, and culture with an emphasis on communication.  This course is specifically designed for students preparing to further expand their studies in the Spanish language, either through AP or college-level Spanish.

Notes:  This is a course recommended for the student who has demonstrated a high level of interest, dedication, and aptitude for a subject area.

Course Description:

Spanish for Heritage and Native Speakers I, II, and III are intended for native speakers (those raised in an environment using mainly a language other than English) and heritage speakers (those raised in an environment where the language was most likely spoken in the home). The courses provide a thorough review of the Spanish language and are conducted entirely in Spanish. Students improve literacy through extensive, varied writing activities and exposure to a variety of Hispanic literature, newspapers, magazines, films, music, and current issues. Language skills are improved through oral presentations, debates, and class discussions in both formal and informal settings. Hispanic culture and traditions are presented to deepen students’ appreciation of the native language.

Spanish for Heritage and Native Speakers I, II, and III include applications, problem solving, higher-order thinking skills, and performance-based, open-ended assessments with rubrics. Although there is no prerequisite for Spanish for Heritage and Native Speakers I, students should be conversant in Spanish. Arkansas Department of Education approval is not required.

Course Description:

Fourth-year ADV Spanish is an upper-level course. Curriculum includes an emphasis on conversation & communication as well as a review of grammar with guided discussions which include culturally appropriate themes.  This course is specifically designed for students who desire to be able to communicate in Spanish and are preparing to further expand their studies in the Spanish language, either through AP or college-level Spanish.

Course Description:

Beginning Spanish I/II is an introductory course for students with little or no previous knowledge of the language.  This course is designed to develop the four basic language skills in Spanish – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Emphasis placed on basic vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural aspect of the language.

Notes:  *ONLY OFFERED AS A VIRTUAL COURSE*

 *National Park College Concurrent Credit Class: 

Students completing this course with a final grade of “C” or better will be able to earn three credit hours through NPC.

AP Spanish

Course Description:

The course is designed to prepare students for success on the AP Spanish Language Exam through a complete review of grammar, vocabulary, and usage of the language. Students will build their proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, writing, reading, cultural studies, and vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to move beyond language acquisition to language application in community settings.

Notes:  This is a course recommended for the student who has demonstrated a high level of interest, dedication, and aptitude for a subject area.  College credit may be earned with an acceptable score on the AP exam.  Students must take the AP exam in order to receive the weighted grade points.
