Orientation to Teaching I is designed to provide students with information and experiences in the field of education. Students will develop a better understanding of themselves as learners, discover a variety of learning styles and approaches to best fit students, learn the role of a teacher, and will participate in a 40 hour practicum. During practicum, they will be allowed to have experiences with various educators, grade levels, subject areas, and ability groups. Students will be responsible for preparing lessons, assisting the teacher with materials, grading, planning, and conducting themselves in a respectful manner. Upon exiting this course, students should have identified areas of special interest that they would like to pursue, have a better understanding of the teaching profession, and have enhanced employability skills which will be of benefit regardless of the occupation or career in which employed. After completing this course, students are eligible to take Orientation to Teaching II.
Hear from several guest speakers throughout the year including teachers, principals, and administrators such as Mr. Bruce Orr.
Create and teach your own lessons, like how to play 3-on-3 Basketball.
Have you ever made slime in one of your classes? One of our students taught her classmates how to make slime!
Volunteer opportunities are always available, like dressing as characters and eating lunch with Kindergartners!
Lakeside also has an Educators of Tomorrow club. Anyone interested in Education can join the club, you do not have to be enrolled in Orientation to Teaching. We have monthly meetings with guest speakers, we travel to colleges to tour their Education programs, volunteer at club fairs, and participate in extracurricular projects such as Broadcasting's LipDub.
