Qualified coxswains on the Lady Nelson are responsible for all aspects of using the inflatable dinghy including:
Ensuring adequate fuel is available
Checking the dinghy pre-trip (especially if it has been awhile since last used)
Two way radio and VHF radio/s onboard
Decisions regarding safety of passengers and crew on the dinghy - if you do not feel you can safely offload and pick up passengers or crew then advise the master.
Post trip maintenance (running the engine in fresh water and ensuring the dinghy is clean and dry before stowing in the lazarette - recommendation is to run the engine in fresh water after each day use)
A whatsapp group called 'Ducky Driver's' is frequently used for qualified and trainee coxswains to share tips and ask questions.
Preparing the Dinghy
Use minimum one and ideally 2 lanyards for lifting the engine out of the lazerette
The new pump (black and orange) runs off a grey, flat 12 v plug at the base of the deck fire pump. The pump has inflate and deflate outlets as well as plus and minus buttons to set a desired pressure after which the pump will turn off. Hold the bottom button to turn the pump on. The second speed kicks in at about 1psi. Historically the RB has been under inflated.
Roll out the dinghy
Slide the black thrust plate through two belts on the underside of the floor and inset the floor into the dinghy (keel should not be inflated). Align the hole at the bow to be over the inflation valve for the keel
Inflate the floor to approximately 4.35 psi. Push the sides under the tubes as far as possible and under the metal ledges at the aft end. Inflate to minimum 8.7 psi (max 11.6 psi)
Inflate the sections in the following order - all sections should be 3.5psi
starboard aft
Port aft
Bow
Lowering the Dinghy to the Water
Strops for bow and stern are marked - when correct, the dinghy will stay level when raised
Put the metal ladder in first
Raise high enough using the handy billy to attached the engine
Use the extendable boat hook used for the forward spring to keep the dinghy away from the side of the boat when lowering (push where the strops connect to the carabiner on the end of the handy billy line.
Make sure someone is holding the bow and stern lines
raise over the fence and lower to the water - tie off using the bow and stern lines
Outboard Motor
Check enough fuel
